The Boys of Summer are back in town.
Tonight, the Statesville Owls christen their second Southern Collegiate Baseball League season against the Carolina Chaos of Clemson, S.C.
Game time is 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for senior citizens and students. Children ages 12 and under can watch the game for free.
It is the first of 14 home dates for the Owls, who play their home games at Statesville High School.
If last year’s opener is any indication, get there early. The home and visitor bleachers were jam-packed 30 minutes before the opening pitch, and folks continued pouring into the ballpark to watch the game however they could — on folding chairs, on blankets or even standing.
The Owls gave the 423 paid fans their monies worth that night, winning in the bottom of the ninth inning, 5-4, over the Carolina Stingers of Fort Mill, S.C. An errant throw to first base on a two-out ground ball by Kyle Brandenburg scored the winning run from third base.
Brandenburg is one of more than a handful of players who returned to the Owls’ wooden-bat summer league team this year.
Joe Frabasile is another returnee. A corner infielder from Hartsdale, N.Y., he launched a 3-2 pitch over the left field fence during the second inning of the 2010 opener for the Owls’ first-ever home run.
Members comprising this year’s team hail from cities and towns up and down the east coast.
There are also local players on the team, like Brennan Daniels, a Statesville native. A pitcher at Brevard College, he led the Owls’ staff in innings pitched with a 1.91 earned-run average last season. Daniels was one of six Owls represented in the SCBL All-Star game.
The Owls are a collection of players blended for summer development.
The product is entertaining, which might explain why the Owls led the league in attendance last year on their way to a 22-18 record. They averaged around 350 paid fans per game with a season-high of 827 watching their 6-2 July 4 celebration victory over the Tennessee Tornado of Johnson City, Tenn.
More fireworks could be in store for the Owls this season, possibly as soon as tonight’s game.
Come on out to the ballpark. Bring the kids.
    Let’s play ball.
