    Hey you COLLEGE guys .......

Most of the summer collegiate leagues fill up their rosters in the fall, preparing for next year. Not all colleges/universities think it's good (particularly for young pitchers), other's think it's great and work to place their players in an appropriate setting.

That being the case, WHO IS GOING WHERE to play next summer???????

    Hey there NC...

Here is what I know so far.

Bard is headed up to the Cape Cod League this summer. He is playing for Warham (sp?) I believe.

I am still uncertain where I will be playing this summer. The situation right now is I am waiting to find out whether or not I will be able to play in the Cape, I might not find out until the spring. If that works out I will play there. If it does not work out, then right now it is looking like I will travel to either Alaska or New England to play one of those leagues. There is a chance that I stay here and play for Wilson in the Coastal Plains League, but right now it is looking like I will be traveling north or way north. I hope that if the Cape does not work out, that I can go to Alaska. I have heard that there is some great ball being played up there and that the experience is excellent. But we will see. All I am focused on now is now. I don't have time to worry much about whether or not I will be in the Cape, there are many great places to play ball. I'll let you know if I hear anything else.

Thanks for the update UP .....

And if you get "way north", get some fishing in ... after all, it will be light 23 hours a day and you can't practice THAT long.

yes pitchers should go play summer ball. You need as many innings as possible at 19-20.

Let me explain to you the biggest benefit of summer ball. It teaches you that everyone is human and puts their pants on the same. Sometimes as a college player you and your teammates say "man, fill in the blank has some awesome talent." Well when you get to summer ball, you are with players from the SEC, ACC, Pac 10, Big 12, CUSA, etc. You play with them all summer and watch them struggle also, and you begin to realize those guys from famous programs are not as elite as you thought nor better than you. You iin fact, may realize that you have more talent than a Cal St Fullerton player, and before you never thought that was possible. When you come back to your school in the fall, you can lead and make the rest of your squad understand that other schools aren't as superior as you may think. I remember a super talented guy from UNCC, he was my buddy, but he never wanted to go play summer ball. When UNCC played certain schools he would be in awe and as a result he could not perform. Had he gone to summer ball, he would of realized those guys weren't as good as he thinks. Its all in your head.

I played two seasons, one in the Vallye League of Virginia, and the next summer in the Jayhawk League of the Midwest. My roommate was Reid Ryan, Nolan's son, and he was not our best pitcher by far. Jeremy Giambi and Damon Minor were on the team too. When I got back home to UNCC, I realized those guys were no better. So when I took the mound the next two season's, nobody intimidated me, since I had played with or against about every stud in the country in summer ball. It makes you percieve other programs realistically without awe since you were their teammates, and got to play, eat, drink :D , and live with them.

I'm just curious. With at least a dozen or more top flite, HIGHLY COMPETITIVE, college summer baseball leagues within 500 miles of this area, why would a coach recommend going half way around the world to play summer ball? That's like driving to the beach when your wife asks you to go pick up a gallon of milk at the neighborhood grocery store.

Up and In: If you go to Alaska, you better take a case of insect repellent with you. Mosquitos suck a pint of blood per bite.

I agree with Papabear. If the college coaches in the southeast would get their heads together and support the southern summer leagues, there would be no need to travel way off to play summer ball. The competition level would be tremendous. Guess that would cut down on some paid trips to far away places to check on their players then, Let's see, if Fox gets a couple in Cape Cod, a couple in Alaska, and a couple in New England. Hmmmmmm, makes for a few nice athletic department funded trips.
