They have talent that keeps getting squandered by coaching.

Matt Layman was a "machine"....great job Matt! This was the "typical" South Meck / Providence match up.

Congrats to both teams and good luck in the State playoffs.:trophy: :ylsuper:

Was it me, or was Bags' a little carelus in pitching Laymen the complete 11 innings?

Sorry guys, I just do not like his coaching style. he seems to ruin a lot of players, look at what Coble did at Belmont this year.

Is 116 pitches alot? Mailman threw 108. Shane Small threw over 130 in the second game against South Meck earlier in the season. What's alot of pitches?

    What players has he ruined?

Believe me, if it was up to Matt Layman he would have pitched all night. Matt Layman is one of the best pitchers around, but has not had many opportunities to show his talent. When you are the 3rd man in the rotation, unfortunately, that happens. It's a shame though because Layman is very, very good.

Last year, Matt started the 1st game in the State Championship and he was awesome and deserved the win. Some players become even better in college than HS and I believe that is what will happen to Matt Layman. :trophy:

    Several things to consider:

    1) Matt is a big strong pitcher
    2) He had limited innings through the season
    3) He was hitting his spots and most importantly, was feeling good

This means 1) his arm isn't a noodle, 2) he was fresh because he didn't pitch 110 every week and 3) the coach didn't deny his player the opportunity to "acheive" when the opportunity presented itself.

    this may be your issue

    three years from now

three years from now will tale if throwing over 100 pitches in a high school game is to much. thats about the time floaters will show up in the arm in college!!!!!! right now the tendons and ligaments are stronger than the bones and when a kid throws to many pitches he can pull bone from the arm since the bone is soft they do not fell it now but as they get older the bone becomes harder then the pain starts. whats next is surgery!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:umno: :agreed: :ylsuper: :feedback: :woohoo:

    Next LEvel

Next Level said it best. I know Matt is strong, and a great talent, I am just sorry that his Bags did not let him show it this year. My point is that the damage will not show now, but a couple of years down the road.

The fact that he is "rested" by not throwing much this year, is what will cause the damage. Even if he only threw 116 pitches, he rested the arm after every inning, threw warm up pitches, bullpen, etc...

Too many coaches and parents for that matter think that because a kid is strong and big, and hasn't been used much this year, makes it OK to throw a lot of pitches. This is just the opposite. I see it on a daily basis of injuries that come to me, this I hope is not one of them. Matt is a great kid, and deserved the ball more than he got it this year, and then to use him up on one game, well I may be wrong.

Good luck South, we are pulling for you.

Squid you could be right, not a big "Bags" fan. I do not have a child that played for him either. Most folks fall for the mystique of Bags, but I have not. He has done a great job at SM building a nice facility, but he has not improved one player there, and that concerns me as a person who works with athletes on a daily basis.

Why would he leave his alma matta for a new school, with the same pay? Only miles from this one! Just a little curious as to why, someone said it best a few post back, talent has dried up, time to follow the talent. Can't blame him, but shows lack of teaching ability.

Just think what could have been at SM with all the great players that came through that school!!!:umno:
