With the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s (NCHSAA) realignment of 1969-70, the Southwestern 4A conference was born and has been one of the state’s premier baseball leagues ever since. In 2009, the league celebrated its 40th anniversary with bookend state titles when Myers Park won the loop’s first in its premier year of 1970 and Ardrey Kell captured its latest in June.

As the league enters its fifth decade, the level of excellence continues to grow. Be sure to check out the 2010 SW4A preview coming to TBR on November 27th. Until then, you can have some fun with SW4A trivia.

    1. How many state titles has the SW4A won? Name them:

    2. How many different schools have represented the SW4A in the finals?

    3. How many different schools have played in the SW4A?

    4. In the 40 history of the SW4A, how many times has a league member played in the state championship series?

    5. What SW4A member has made the most finals appearances?

    6. What SW4A team has made only one finals appearance?

    7. Three SW4A teams have made finals appearances outside the league.
    Name them.

    8. What is the only school representing the SW4A that loss each of it’s finals appearances?

    9. SW4A teams made seven finals appearances in the 70’s. How many titles did they win?

    10. SW4A teams made two finals appearances in the 80’s. How many titles did they win?

    11. What school has won or shared the most league titles?

    12. Only one non-Mecklenburg team won a SW4A title. Who?

    13. Four SW4A teams did not win the league or tournament title, yet made it to the state championship series. Who are they?

    14. What two schools never won a conference title but won the league tournament?

    15. This school won the initial SW4A tournament in 1980.

    16. This school has never won a SW4A tournament title, but has won a State Championship title.

    17. Providence has won seven SW4A tournaments. Who else has seven?

    18. Which current SW4A member has gone the longest without winning a league or tournament title?

    19. Who was the last team to storm through league play unbeaten?

    20. This year’s realignment has seven schools in the SW4A. What has been the maximum number of schools in the league?

Bonus: In 1977 Garinger finished the season at 17-1, yet did not win the league. What happened?

Bonus #2: Why were there multiple winners in the SW4A in 1974 & 75?

Wow...I can probably answer part of some of these...but these are tough. How long did it take you to put this together?

Was that the year they had to forfeit some games due to an ineligible player?

I nominate Braves to be the one who takes the first stab at answering all of those.

Very impressive list of questions, incmi!

The two teams did not play each other

I'm just taking a stab in the dark because I wasn't around in the 70's and 80's--unlike Prepster who was teaching here during that time. I probably got them all wrong, but it ws fun to play. Alex- I'll take Meca conference for $200.

Those are some good questions. The original SW4A was Independence, Garinger, East mecklenburg, Harding, West Mecklenburg, North Mecklenburg, Olympic, West Charlotte, South Mecklenburg. I know Harding played in the state finals in 75 0r 76 led by Dickie Noles and i believe West Meck played in the finals in 78 0r 79 led by Lee nance.
