I see your point. However, it is not my son at all. I don't have a son in sports. So I guess I am not upset with this coach for other reasons. I just feel like it is contradictory to teach or coach at a Christian school and talk the way this particular coach does. From my own experience, I have found that positive reinforcement works the best. Like I said though, to each his own I guess.

beamer, my apologies for making assumptions. I also agree a christian school environment is no place for the type of language you referred to.

After reading my post I thought about the ways I try to motivate my players and sometimes it includes awful language and almost every encounter I have with umpires includes bad language. Umpires ruin a perfectly conceived game. but that's a whole 'nother post....

Anyways, I think the way I have earned my players trust and can motivate them in tough situations is they know I will "go through the wall for them."
We always talk about wanting players who will go through a wall for us. My guys will because they know I would do anything for them. we don't lie to each other and we take responsibility for our mistakes. that always goes both ways. I have probably apologized to my staff ten times this year about something or another.

Disappointment and defeat in our relationship revolves around work ethic and daily focus. These are our reasons we believe we are better than our opponent. We will always outwork and out confidence the other staff. If we aren't completely focused every day then we lost that day.

Those days are usually when I use bad language the most....

The great ones know how to motivate kids without cursing them. I have seen some old coaches in my day that could verbally undress a kid, challenge his manhood, and break his spirit, all without uttering one curse word. And most of those guys would soon after find a wayt to praise that did to build him back up after the beat down.

Profanity is the tool of a conversational cripple. I have no doubt that it's totally an issue of self control. I've never heard anyone curse in Church.

I'm not saying I've never used profanity. But I am saying I was wrong when I did it. So are coaches.

I thought this was about swearing in front of like middle schoolers and young kids. If kids in college athletics can't believe a coach is swearing then they are very naive. I don't think it's necessary but when you are yelling at someone to get your point across yelling "Gosh Darnit!" doesn't quite do it.

This could be a touchy subject.... there are plenty of things about sports that arent right... arent ethical but are still done. In baseball is it ethical to drop the bat and show up the pitcher after a cranked homerun... no, well how about the next at bat when the batter gets one in the ear. But it still happens, and the people that invented these sports knew it would happen a long time ago. This isnt a new thing. This is why the sport of basketball has technicals, baseball has ejections. Because coaches lose their temper. In middle school is it acceptable, def not. In highschool is it acceptable, probably not but tolerated. In college and on up is it acceptable, yes because of the kids age. If your old enough to buy tobacco, then your old enough to have it spit on you while being yelled at. If your in college then you are old enough and wise enough to make your own decisions. You are an adult, if you have a problem that is your concern as a player, not another coach from the stands. If I was a fireman that had saved numerous people from fires then i wouldnt let a coach tell me how to do my job. Should be the same way with a coach thats won numerous games. Its simply a method for getting points across, and from college on players should have a strong enough mind state for it to help them rather then hurt them. Just my two cents.
