I think we should hire better coaches. Not just the ones who produce on the field. When Monte was at Central he had some very high gpas. Girls who knew that hard work gets results. They had high expectations on the field and in the classroom. Our basketball coach this year was not the best producer of wins and losses. His boys played hard and worked. They were also in a mandatory study hall before practice each day. Some kids choose not to play for him this year. WE all will decisions in life about where we want to be. These young men set a goal and will learn from it.

    Still exists in my household!

Great post! This practice still exists in our household. We told both our DDs over and over that grades come first period! No exceptions! In my oldest DDs Sophomore year, her grades started slipping a little so we, not the coach, imposed a one week suspension from softball. She was to go to practice and/or games in street clothes and sit there and do her homework. Once we lifted our suspension (she had to bring home notes from her teacher(s) saying her grades were back in line), the coach suspended her for the next two games for getting suspended by us! Let's just say we never had that issue again and now she is in college, playing ball, getting good grades and having a blast.

Biggest thing is, you can't just say it, you HAVE to follow through no matter what!

So far so good with the youngest...

    Good Example

I know a kid who came from a home full of violence, drugs, alcohol abuse etc. She was taken out of that situation when she was in the second grade. Her emotional state at that time was horrible, very withdrawn, shy and nervous. When she discovered softball at age 10 it gave her a sense of identity. She will tell you she is at total peace when she is on the field. The love of softball has given her the courage to take on honors classes, strive to get to the next level. Her dream is to play in college and this month she will sign her letter of intent. She knows good grades are the only way to continue to play. Softball has been a big part in changing this kids life. Sports are good for kids!

Lets not expand the generation of kids whose only experience with a sport is on a computer screen.

If the rules in place were enforced, it would take care of the bad students. All this new silly rule will accomplish is an exodus of athletes to other schools, which will only make the problem worse.

    Why is everyone upset?

Hitting is a game of failure go one for three and your batting .333 a good average by most standards! Just kidding!!! We as parents and coaches hold our players to a higher standard, that is why they are called Student/Athletes. My DD 's entire team (TB-Team) have an average GPA of 3.9+. Additionally she tutors others at her HS both Athletes and Non-
Athletes. This proposed bill is :94poopbanana-thumb1

Our team has the highest cummulative GPA of any sport. We also have several players in the IB program.

My DD has over an 4.0 due to honors weighting. Her GPA - ERA is equally impressive.

I've been getting on to her about her schedule next year. She's only taking two honors courses. She said "but Dad, I'm taking 3 AP classes, too." What can you do?
