It is something I battle internally everyday. I personally do not like it when players talk while they stretch, but while I was in college our coach didn't have a preference and I talked the entire time. Do not think it had an effect on performance. Maybe it did?

    I'm all ears.....

talk talk talk talk.... I understand some players may like some quiet personal time to get their thoughts together before a game but that doesn't have to be during stretching time. Talking and joking around about what happened on campus that day are great ways to keep the guys loose in my opinion.

Talk. Stay loose and comfortable. Tell some jokes. Pick on the other team.

I like talking to keep them loose. Preferably its about the game but it doesn't really matter as long as they're focused. Definitely no major clowning, though. Then I'm worried their minds aren't on the game. If you mandate silence I think you set the guys up to be too tight. It's a fine line, though.

I have asked my son what the hell they are always talking about during practice and games... especially when the pitchers are all sitting in the bullpen. His answer was " I don't know... just stuff".

Baseball players not talking would be like the sun not rising... unnatural to say the least!

A compilation of conversations from the bullpen would probably end up being one of the funniest books ever published.

Also, if your son has ever had a coach who is, shall we say, "animated" in the dugout when the game tightens up, notice how as many pitchers as possible leave the dugout and hightail it down to the bullpen where the environment is a little less "electric." LOL

Ha! Ha! Saw that in summer ball when he played in the CPL for Columbia a couple years ago. Self preservation to say the least!
