Very, very informative and enlightening post Lefty. Just the kind of information I knew you would share with us.

If you get a chance to meet lefty, the one impression you will leave with is his blunt honesty. He will tell you exactly what he thinks versus what you may want to hear....and what exactly would you want from someone in his position? Honesty? truthfullness? or political correctness

Of course, there are times I don't always agree with him, but that's alright...he's slowly comin' around to my thinking:D

Great insight into the process and hopefully enough people will read it and come to grips where their boy stands.

Really enjoyed you sharing that with us.

Syd thrift has two books. unfortunately, he first I can not remember the name. that's the better one.

His other book which came out in about '93 is called "The game according to SYD" the first goes in depth about the academy the second only hits the high points.

Apparently, after 6 or 8 years the Royals decided do away with the program to save money. remember this was back in the 70's when the royals were a big draw.

Some of their innovations were the first use of strength training, visual exercises, speed training. They were the first to incorporate nutrition into the baseball player's training. they used track coaches. The radar gun was brought to where it is known today at the academy.

also I read the huge personality test given to potential first rounders were developed at the academy. Remember, the people at the academy weren't really baseball players from what Thrift says. It was track stars and people of that caliber athlete.

yes, like I said I knew a guy that went to the Royals' academy. this would have been in the early 80's. it was daylong baseball training & nothing but baseball 24/7.

I remember a guy from my area that attended in the early 70's. His name is Gary Lance. He went on to have marginal success with the Royals.

    olefty...How about Pitchers?

Can you tell us in the same manner as you did above how a scout looks at pitchers? Thanks!
