Humm, post an ID instead of a name, I kinda like that. I like the idea of the coach talking to every player individually best but I know that is not goning to happen often with coaches being so busy so that is a decent alternative - definitely better than posting a name.

Also, even though Coach Billings has 3 days of tryouts, a buddy of mine who's son plays at Hopewell said Coach Billings pretty much knows who he wants on his team after fall workouts and winter conditioning (unless a big time stud shows up at the tryouts, or the boy played a fall AND winter sport, or is a transfer in). Of course I would assume that this is probably how it works for most programs that have off season workouts.

Using a list with a number or name is gutless. The kid put his time and effort into trying out so a 5 minute conversation with the coach about why not and what the kid can do to improve for next year ought to be the least a coach can do. Coach Bagwell and Coach Hignight do it right. Maybe that's why their programs are successful.

I understand and agree but what about pure logistics? Easy to do if there's just a few to speak to, but what if there's 10-15-20 or more?

what if you put a note on the "list" for anyone that did not "make it" to see the coach for a brief talk. Then again you could see who is serious to find out what they came up short on.

Absolutely...it's just something he believes in. I find it commendable

PS- he actually has had players that he cut work on the areas he discussed and they made the team the following year

There have been years that SM have had over 100 tryout, but as years passed, many of the kids knew if they could compete or not and the numbers reduced to 50-60. But Bagwell still made time for all of them.

    I am...

gutless then... Life is tough! Sorry but face the facts doesn t mean or imply anything personal!! Some people obviously get their feelings hurt tho regardless :( I speak to the team collectively on the last day of tryouts, I eye each and everyone of them with all sincerity and i thank ALL of them personally and wish them well, to continue to play and improve, and by all means ciome back yesterday. Next thing you know they ll be sueing you for posting a list of the names of those who made it...come on get real...:gaga:
Still almost every year Mommy and Daddy calls the principal to complain and vent and argue etc etc etc.........

Just letting you know how it seems to successfully work. I know the young men who don't make the team appreciate the candor of a brief individual conversation rather than just reading a piece of paper. Logic would seem to favor the personal approach for avoiding some of those phone calls to the principal you comment on.

My question to you is why wouldn't you do it this way?

Providence and South Meck may have 10-20 cuts every year. Coach shows up at 6am and kids can go by his office as well as after school on cut day. 20 kids who are cut at 5 minutes each plus 30 kids who make it at 2 minutes each = about 3 hours of time. Doesn't seem like a big time committment to me.;)

    No logic at all...

I care abourt EVERY kid and doubly moreso the kids who love the game as much as I have! Braves mentioned logistics as being the main reason . People simply don t understand or appreciate the amount of time and work a "classroom" teacher as well as a fulltime coach (often more than one sport) commits to their profession. In many other instances frankly they don t give a s*** period. So why should I therefore?
Remember this becuase it is flat out THE facts!

Each Coach has their own way and that's yours. You've clearly stated yours and the reasons behind yours. Good luck, God Bless and don't think all parents "don't understand and don't appreciate" what teacher/coaches do for the kids. The majority of parents do.
