    November 22: Derek Jeter

If Derek insists on a 5 yr contract what should the Yankees do?

I would think that a 3-year deal would be more appropriate, given his age, but, lets face it, he's going to get whatever he wants. It's the Yankees. Jeter is their most popular player. He's not going anywhere else. He was down statistically this year (.270 BA), but he'll probadly bounce back. He is still a great shortstop (only 6 errors all year). Who else can they get to do that? Yankee fans would kill little Stein if they let him go to another team.

i had the Jeter discussion with a buddy the other day. he kept saying "what would he get on the open market?" as his argument.

i contested that when we're talking about Jeter and the Yankees, there are no comparables. the open market doesn't matter to that organization. not to mention, he is the face of the franchise.

any other athlete...team...sport...this isn't even a discussion, because his demands would be totally unrealistic. but in this particular situation, Jeter is going to get close to what he wants because of his past accomplishments and what he's meant to the organization for the past 15 years.

the Yankees will not, i repeat, WILL NOT let their captain walk to another team.

i say he gets in the neighborhood of 3 yrs/$63 million with a mutual option for the 4th year and a club option for a 5th. that'll get it done on both ends.

    Jeter................does he have .........

Does Jeter have managerial potential? I have never read or heard about what he has between the ears. He certainly is admired for his on the field and in the dugout demeanor. If not manager, General Manager skills? Or is he just a jock??

    Thanks,

Derek Jeter should and I believe will receive the highest 3 year contract in the history of the game. He not only is the "Face of the Yankees", he owns the city. There is no other professional athlete in the last 15 years that is more admired and respected in NYC. He doesn't get into trouble; he doesn't grab headlines for negative publicity: All Derek Jeter has done is won championships and represented his team in a classy way. Heck, even fans of other teams that are prone to be anti-Yankees won't say anything bad about Jeter---they admire him.

There are so many accolades one could laud on him, but many include areas outside the lines. His last contract must include all of the things he has done for the franchise outside of projecting what the next 3 year performance will be.

When Derek Jeter finishes his last contract, a part of the Yankee lore will go with him......and Arod will not be the one to pick up that slack.

I say Jeter warrants a 3 year contract at 90 million.....the Yankees will make up that money in one year alone when Derek does a swan song his last year. Every stadium will be sold out cheering for Jeter and letting him know how much they will miss him.

I would say that Derek Jeter is not only the most admired and respected player in NY, but in all of baseball.

PS- Maybe 90 million is not enough

Braves, I threw out the 3/$63 number thinking that it was equivalent to his contract now and would probably make he and the Yankees happy.

however, i agree with you wholeheartedly. i'm a huge braves fan and tend to dislike the yankees and everything about them. that being said, Derek Jeter has always been one of my favorite players for the exact reasons you pointed out.

he plays hard. he plays the right way. he makes the routine play. he makes the spectacular play. he makes the smart play. he makes the selfless play in a game too often looked at as individual.

the guy is the consomate professional in th truest sense of the word. no player has represented himself, his team or MLB as classily and humbly as Derek Jeter has over the past 15 years.

he's earned every bit of that $30 million/per that you suggested and then some.

I agree with Braves. And going even further, I would be devastated if an agreement couldn't be reached and Jeter went to another team...any other team...and there would be some big $$ market team that would be willing to pay whatever he wanted, I'm sure. I can't imagine Derek wearing anything other than yankee pinstripes! It would be blasphemy!!! At least for 3 or 4 years..then I have my hopes about his replacement. :)

    nevermind.................

I just saw an interview with Derek Jeter and i withdraw my questions about his being managerial potential. He could not respond coherently to any question. Obviously he did not attend college, and high school seems improbable. Great jock!!!

Are you sure it was Derek Jeter? Who plays for the Yankees?? His father is a doctor..I would predict that he is likely not "dim-witted" as you are implying. How dare you talk about my boy.
