For you old guys...Dale Murphy came up as a catcher in the minors. He had a cannon for an arm. There was just one itsy, bitsy problem.....nearly every throw would end up in centerfield. After one particular brutal game for Murphy, the coach was climbing all over him. Now, Murphy was the nicest guy you could ever meet. He would take things to heart when a coach criticized him...often times it would produce him to become sullen and very quiet. Well, one inning Dale launched one. It was the hardest, fastest throw I had ever seen by a catcher....unfortunately, it was a little off base. The 2nd baseman was cheating towards the 1st b hole due to a LH batter. He took one step towards 2nd when the ball nearly hit him in the gut. Players put their gloves up by their faces to mask their laughing. The coach was screaming...Murphy was shaking his head and kicking the dirt, but hid behind his mask (that he never mastered to remove). The coach called time and summoned everyone to the mound. He preceeded to jump all over Dale while everyone else continued not to pee in their pants. The coach said " Da#%$#it, Murphy. Can't you throw the dadgum little white ball to 2nd". We were expecting Dale to hang his head and shuffle his feet like he would normally do when being yelled at. But he looked the manager in the eye and told him very quietly, "I did".

Oh shoot...that was it. The players lost it. The umpire came out and heard what happened and he lost it. The other umpires joined in to find out what was going on and they lost it. The manager didn't understand what was so funny and he stormed back to the dugout. It may have been 2 minutes, but it felt like it was an hour...everyone patting Murphy on the back and telling him how great he was.

Two games later, Murphy was playing CF.

It was the opposing team's announcer....in baseball, you never speak of a no hitter while it's happening....superstition. Do they have something like this in Hockey?

    Coach27 will remember this

2000 Little League state championship in Greenville, NC. ( Now you know what baseball means to people in Greenville!). Home town Greenville leads North Durham 6-2 with two outs and nobody on in the bottom of the last inning at picturesque Elm Street City Park. Durham rallies with 9 consective hits to win 7-6.

Headlines in the Greenville paper the next day read: "NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET"

    Next year

2001 Little League state championship game in Hickory. Same Durham team leads Matthews 2-1 in bottom of last innings with two outs and two strikes on the batter who is pinch hitting for the number nine hitter and absolutely no chance of hitting our stud. So what's the coach do? Calls for a bunt.....it works. Matthews rallies for a 3-2 win and the championship.

I'll NEVER forget that one. Where are you coach? I know you're out there somewhere. Do you remember?

    FUNNY

West Forsyth and East Forsyth 2006 JV.

Game tied at 10 in the bottom of the 10th. Bases loaded for West, 2 outs, 1 strike. Coach looks around and sees all the infielder way deep (force at any base) and called a squeeze. Perfect, West won 11-10!
