Hey TBR readers check this one out (it really happened).......

A certain 3A/4A Conference just published their 2013 All Conference Selections. Here is how it played out:

    1. The regular season and conf. tourney champ finished 9-1 and then 2-0 in the conf. tourney (20-3 overall). Then advanced to the 4th round of the State Playoffs, losing a heartbreaker 3-2 to a team playing for the State Championship this weekend in Raleigh. Everyone probably would agree this is a pretty good team and must have some decent players to put those numbers up!

    2. Anyway, they had placed 3 ladies on the All Conf. Team and did have the Conf. Coach of the Year (much deserved).

    3. But here is where it gets quite interesting. The 2nd place team( as a matter of a tie break) placed 4 and the 3rd place team placed 6 ladies on the All Conf. Team! (Yes, you read that correctly) The Conference Champs beat these teams a combined total of 4 times.

    4. Gets even better! The 4th place team, who was run ruled twice and shutout the 3rd time, by the conference champ also received 3 placements (same as the Conf. Champs).

I ask one question, "How is this even possible or logical"?

PS. It was the Southern Carolina Conference and the Champion of both the Regular Season and Tournament was Marvin Ridge!

    Hmmmmm!!

Sounds like the champion team should have placed more than three.

I understand how a team could have 4 All Conference players and still lose games. Especially if either the pitcher or catcher (or both) weren't All Conference.

    Don't worry, be happy!

It sometimes falls that way. My daughter played for a school that was conference champions, then later district champions. Placed 4 on the all-conference list that year. The 2nd place team 1 or 2 more on the team than us. The following year, the 2nd place team the year prior was the conference champs, although we went to the district round and then did not in play offs. Same break down, us with 4, them with more. You never know how the cookie crumbles.

In most conferences, all-conference is decided on by a vote of all coaches. Is it different in yours? If not, then it seems to me the majority of the coaches voted for the players on the all-conference team and your answer for what they saw that led them to place more on the all-conference team than the season champ resides there.

    Point of clarification

I want to clarify an item regarding my original post. There has been precedent set by this conference that prompted my original post. Historically this conference has awarded spots on the All Conference team based upon order of finish. Right or wrong that is how it has been done for at least the past 3 - 4 years (that I am aware of). In those years the Conference Champs had been given 6-7 spots, 2nd place 4-5 spots, 3rd place 3, 4 -6th place usually got 1 and maybe 2 at the most. This year this formula and or criteria were obviously changed. My frustration stems from the fact that this is the first year we have had a new conference champ. The team that actually placed 3rd this year was dominating in the past 4 years and rightly so received accolades for their top players, which numbered up to 7 spots on the All Conference team. So my questions are as follows:

    1. Why the change?

    2. Why has the team that dominated in the past but finished 3rd this year (they had identical record with the 2nd place team but lost out based upon head to head match ups) still receive 6 spots? This in spite of finishing down the list.

    3. How can a team that with an overall conference record of 11-1 receive the same number of AC spots as a team that finished 4th and had a record of 5-7 (especially with the precedent that the Conference had set in the past?

Suggestion: If you are looking for the fairest and most equitable way to name All Conference, do it the old fashion way! By position; 2 pitchers, and one player for each position. Name a First Team, Second Team, and Honorable Mention based upon the number of votes received. It will be a much better representation of who has earned the accolade. It is not perfect, it will never be, but a heck of a lot better than what we have now.

Things that make you go mmmmm Know the facts!

First of all Dkaz there is no such rule in the conference where the 1st place team gets x number and the 2 place teams gets x. So there you are wrong.

Secondly players are nominated by their coaches and are voted on by everyone except their own coach. Wrong Again.

Finally unless you are in the room then YOU do not know what happens and since I did not see you there You DO NOT know what happened.

Should MRHS had more players probably so but the votes did not fall that way. Why ruin what was a fantastic season with the hint of conspiracy.

Stick to what you know are facts and do not guess! There is no conspiracy theory to be had.
