It's Cheating . Whether the runner is penalized or not in that particular situation is not the point. IMO If a coach or a player knowingly cheats it is a lack of personal integrity. When you know the difference in right and wrong and with purpose you choose to do the wrong thing that action will always be WRONG. I would think as well that it diminishes the respect for the coach, the team and the player when they are known to have cheated.
    I would rather be respected with a L than a cheater with a W.
    Integrity.

I have seen the 2nd to home play twice in Mecklenburg County by two different teams. Winning like that is not winning, that is only a mark in the W column.

    Correct!!

What would you do if your third baseman tripped the runner cutting the corner betweeen second and home?

As opposed to tripping him, the third baseman could (standing out of the basepath) impede the progress of the runner trying to cut the corner, making him go around him.

Raises another interesting point. In order to beat a team that cheats, you have to learn how they do it and teach it to your players..... hmmmm.

Another one of those "life-lesson" opportunities.

    Coachevans,

If my 3rd baseman deliberately tripped an opposing runner - I would buy him a nice fluffy pillow to sit on for the rest of the season.

    NCBB,

I see that as part of the game. Actually - I think that every defensive player should position himself in the most advantageous position. The umpire may not agree - but thats the chance you take.

I do think that is entirely different from deliberately tripping a runner. IMO - it is a very good - and subtle - distinction - between cheating and playing the game smart.

I also think that if the defensve player gets called on it - he should shut his mouth, pull his hat on a little tighter and get ready for the next play.

    I AGREE!!!!!!!!

Bush league whatever you want to refer to it as?? I have never condoned nor RESPECT any team/coaches in which resort to such measures to pull out a victory, YET bottom line it DOES in fact happen and I have been victim to it as well as having been taught it as a player JUST NOT REAL BASEBALL!!!!!!

So what are you guys feelings on stealing signs? For instance if runners on second base are discretely relaying signs to their hitters as they steal them from the catcher.
