I would almost bet that if it was anyone else the NCHSAA would have handed out a good punishment.

Central Cabarrus' softball team, ranked No. 1 in the nation by USA Today, can continue to videotape games, but cannot receive signals from its videographer during play, the N.C. High School Athletic Association ruled Monday.

Hopewell filed a grievance with the NCHSAA last week after a parent, videotaping an April 4 game against the Vikings, filmed Central Cabarrus' video person relaying signals back to the dugout during the game.

Hopewell didn't accuse the Vikings of stealing signs, but Titans officials worried Central Cabarrus was gaining an unfair advantage.

Central Cabarrus coach Monte Sherrill said his team was charting pitch locations.

NCHSAA spokesperson Que Tucker reviewed the tape and said she could see the signals being made but couldn't determine what they were for.

"So we've said coach Sherrill is no longer allowed to have his videographer give any kind of hand signals during the game," Tucker said. "But they can continue to video their games. Everyone has that right."

What an inept organization. Why not ask to see the CC video tape?
