    One other thing

I would like to add to this thread. Just because you are recruited by a major D1 program does not mean you can decide to go to UNCA and start right away. In fact you could decide to go to Lousiburg and find yourself playing behind a JUCO AA that is going be drafted. No matter where you go you better be prepared to compete for the opportunity to get on the field. I dont know a college program that is going to say "Come here and you will start right away. All these guys in our program that have been working their butts off to get that spot are just going to roll over and give it to you." If you are afraid to compete for playing time and you dont think you can crack the line up then maybe college baseball is just not for you? If you believe that you have to start right away in order to have a successful college career then I have no idea where you can go and have a coach tell you that will happen.

The bottom line is no matter where you go you are going to have to compete against other talented players that are just as determined to start as you are. Work your butt off and be the best player you can be. Help your team win in anyway that you can. When your opportunity comes take advantage of it. Dont go to UNC or NCSU ECU WAKE UNCW ELON etc if you are afraid to compete for playing time against other talented players. They dont stop recruiting just because you came in. And the guys brought in before you are not a bunch of scrubs. And I can tell you the same thing goes for Belmont Wingate Catawba Barton Wesleyan etc etc etc. If you think you can just drop down a notch and walk right in and be the man without someone doing everything in their power to not let you then you are sadly mistaken.

No matter where you go you will have to compete to play. And you will have to compete against other players that are just as determined to play as you are. Thats reality. Thats the reality that you better be prepared to face and prepared to attack.

    true words Coach!

I should have said "have the opportunity to play". If you are a shortstop and they have four or five middle infielders on the roster already, then that might not be your best choice.

You are absolutely right about having to compete. I would assume that is a given for any player moving beyond high school to know that. If they don't they won't last long.

I remember a few years back. The Heels had a shortstop that had started as a freshman. His sophomore year a new freshman shortstop beat him out. Just before games started in the spring the soph. quit instead of competing to get his position back. In the end he may have made a good decision, the freshman was Josh Horton.

The Main thing is the player has to "qualify" first. Then look at his athletic ability. If he cannot get in a D-1-why talk about it.all things being equal, the player needs to go where he feels comfortable.having coached High school for 13 years,I have had 3 D-1 players, and 10 D-2,D-3 or juco players. All were different and in one case,I had a D-1 guy that kinda got lost in the shuffle, like Coach may said earlier-those guys are not going to stop recruiting the best-so he transferred to Mt.Olive and had a great career.actually, wished he had done that from the outset. As for the private schools, most d-2 and d-3 in NC are private,so yes tuition is high, but again if the kid is strong academically-he can help his cause.I have a kid right now that was awarded a 6K grant to a private school because of his grades.Another one and his family is paying the same as public school.I also have a player that several D-1 schools are interested in and his upside is tremendous(Great Kid,Great arm,young)-the question is How good does he want to be and how much will he continue to work?I think alot of players and PARENTS get caught up in the D-1 thing.Go see all levels of play-there is alot of players at every level that are solid.I had a player a few years back that many of you remember-he was small as a high school player and a late bloomer. He went D-3 and blew up.when I coached him in Legion after his Fr. year-he hit .650 and was as good as any player I saw all summer.he was a sure fire D-1 guy.he got drafted 2 years later-so as Coach May said-it depends on the player-KEEP WORKING AND WORK WHEN NO ONE IS WATCHING-that will help as much as anything. There is a place for anyone who truly wants to play the game and whether its D-1 or Club-go all out and try to impress someone every time you step b/t the lines.
