I'm going to say exactly what I said in the other thread:

I'm gonna keep throwing his name out there. Thomas Newsome still hasn't had any offers besides walk-ons. Some teams are interested but he hasn't been offered anything. He picked up his 9th win of the season tonight (9-0, complete games in 8 of them, relief win in another) giving up 1 run on 6 hits while striking out seven and walking one. He doesn't throw hard but he made some very good hitters look very dumb. That's the beauty of a change up. Someone pick this kid up.

Superjon- keep bringing his name up. Continue to post information and stats of what makes Thomas Newsome a next level player. There was a player last year, Andrew Morton, that received no college interest until his name kept appearing on TBR and he was discussed regularly....by the end of the summer he received a fantastic college package.

We played Morton in high school. His team was horrible. The sad thing is Thomas is 9-0 for the #2 ranked 2A team in the state (I hate rankings by the way) and he's only had interest and walk-on offers, but no money on the table. He picked up two of West's 4 playoff wins last year, uncluding our only win in the Western Finals, and yet doesn't have an offer. I know he doesn't throw hard but he has two different changeups that are nasty. After seeing pitchers throw upper 80's, low 90 for 6-7 innings and then him coming in for a trip through the lineup, followed by a closer would be unhittable.

I just saw that Justin Duncan at Riverside got the win against Jordan last night and is 8-0 (7-0). If I'm not mistaken, he's thrown over 35 consecutive scoreless innings now. Not sure what he's looking at for college.

    Velocity

SuperJon it sounds like this kid can really pitch. You have said that he doesn't throw hard. What type of velocity are we talking about with this kid? I would be curious to know. Is he low 80's upper 70's?

The fastest he's been clocked at is 82ish I think. The last time I saw him pitch with a radar gun at the game he was constantly throwing about 78 or so with a 66mph changeup and a 54mph double changeup. He's a lefty so the changeup breaks away from righties but the double changeup comes in on righties. He's also got a curve but doesn't throw it much because he doesn't need it. In college, most D1 starters are going to be upper 80's or low 90's. Let a lineup see that for 6-7 innings, then let Newsome come in with the changeup from you know where for one time through the lineup, then a closer pumping about 90 and there's no way he'd be hittable. His ERA on the year is something like 1.15 or around there at least. He gets a ton of lazy pop flies to the middle infielders and easy ground balls to the middle infielders. I can't say enough about the kid really.

    Thanks SuperJon

Thanks for the information. I have seen guys that throw in this range over the years that have great controll of two or three pitches destroy very good teams. We had a lefty several years ago that was 77 tops with his fb but had a devastating cb and change. He beat a great Greene Central team in the state playoffs he actually made very good hitters look bad. He got no offers and decided to walk on at a D-1 school where he wanted to go to school anyway. He lasted to the last cut but didn't make the team because the coaches felt he just did not throw hard enough even though he dominated their hitters in the fall during scrimmages. I actually watched a lhp from FSU carve up UNC last year for around 3 innings in relief and he topped out at 82 on the gun I was sitting behind. I do agree that a kid like this can really do damage against quality hitters at the next level. He just has to find the right place for him and I sure hope he does. It does not have to be D-1 or D-2 does it? If he wants to play at the next level he should find a home no doubt. One thing is for sure I would rather face a hard thrower that is not a great pitcher any day than a guy like you decribe he is. Like Braves said keep posting and keep pushing this kid it can only help. Good Luck

Wow who really trys to figure out whos making the post and no not Josh Drewery, although how can you possibly say anything bad about the guy who is not hitting .268 but right around .300 in a very difficult D1 schedule, and the guy has logged some major innings on the mound as a freshman.

But yeah anybody who is a true competitor generally hates the guys that are on the other side of the field. So obviously there is going to be some personal feelings involved in the posts, now I didn't really mean to call anybody out, but every post I made I feel like I could go out and make a strong case for on the field.

    West Stanly

Tyler Almond, West Stanly 1.28 Almond 4-1
Kurt Benton, West Stanly 1.75 Benton 5-0
It amazes me that these two guys are not drawing more attention. Lenior Rhyne's head coach, and Wingate's head coach was at the old ballpark scouting Kurt Benton on Friday. It makes me wonder if this team was in Charlotte what kind of attention they would be getting.
I will try to get the innings each of these young men have pitched and post accordingly.:twocents:
