Interesting points, Flotg, I think you have a level-headed and accurate assessment. More interesting baseball to played. I also like to read this board because your point about Thrailkill news, Jackson news, Runion news, Hinson news is right on. The Asheville and Hendersonville papers barely identify who else is on any of the teams - and there are a lot of good players in these mountains - particularly at Reynolds and Roberson. A couple of college coaches who do some thorough scouting will end up with some gems.

Roy Hobbs, I guess I got you fired up a little! I know the Greene kid - who plays first base and is a decent middle line-up hitter is in football for TC. I was just surprised - after watching several teams last year - to see that Ramsey was pitching as a starter, and evidently, doing fairly well. I guess I used the words "evidently dominated" because of the article on Prepalert - which really made it sound like a gem of a pitching performance. I don't know the reporter and/or whether he is affiliated with one school or another with a biased angle, etc. I didn't see the game; I just came across the article which I've pasted below.

Anyhow, it makes for good conversation - I'm ready for spring ball in these mountains to begin!!!

Sorry, if I sounded "fired-up". You know us Rocket Fan sometimes feel the need to defend ourselves when it comes to TCR and baseball. TCR has dominated the WNC baseball world for so long that we just feel like we need to let everyone know about the ROCKETS and how good of a team they had last year and about the good players that are there now. John Ramsey is probably the best 3rd baseman, catcher and pitcher TCR has other than Wright who also pitches, catches and plays outfield. I remember the Greene kid now that you mentioned him. You mean to tell me Coach Smith allows a baseball player to play football? LOL. I think ACR has 6 or 7 kids playing football that will make a difference for us in the spring. TCR should go undefeated in their conference. I wish I could say the same for my Rockets with the same confidence. But I believe we'll hold our own. The NW4 could have 5-6 players get drafted-- very early. And I don't know about the all, there could be more.

Sometimes you've gotta wonder about PrepAlert. Don't get me wrong. For the most part they do a great job covering sports in the mountains and its something the kids really needed. But, I've read some things on there and then wondered if I had just watched the exact same game they described. The ACR vs TCR showdown should once again bring large crowds of baseball lovers, scouts, and college coaches. Last years match-ups were very exciting and a great atmosphere for the kids to be in. One of the best quality baseball games in the mountains. This spring should be no different. GO BIG GREEN!

Yes, Roy Hobbs, I think that Reynolds will hold their own and will be very tough to beat particularly when Runion is pitching. It will be interesting to see how many of the drafted players in that NW4-a who are drafted will actually forego college and go ahead to the pros. I know it's way to early to speculate and that a lot will depend on how the season unfolds and where people are drafted, etc. But, what's your take? Do you anticipate that Runion and Hinson will wind up playing college ball for three years or head on into the pros. I think that it's probably safe to speculate that Justin Jackson is going pro unless something drastic occurs or unless there is a negotation problem.

And - I don't know how Greene slipped by Coach Smith and got to the football field. I understood before the season started that Greene might have some division one potential in football in a year or so - don't know if that is really panning out or not at this point. And, in talking to some other people, it does look like Ramsey may, surprisingly, be Roberson's one pitcher this year after all. He did pitch again last night in the fall league against Brevard and struck out thirteen in a complete game. I guess Justin Jackson could pitch some, but speculation around town - and it is just speculation - is that it would be foolish to put a legitimate top ten pick on the mound day in and day out and risk having him injure his arm and possibly taint his career chances. Ayers - and possibly Wright - are other pitching choices. I understand there are a couple of other rising juniors in the mix as well.

Any definite word on where Papelow and other Rockets are going to wind up for college? Have any of your other players narrowed their choices. Of course, Justin Jackson has signed with Arizona State; Wright and Ramsey have not committed yet but have talked to several schools. I hope that some of the remaining Reynolds and Roberson players and players from other WNC schools can sign with some of our local schools, like Western, UNC-A, or App.
