West Meck catcher Troy Lanham is a guy I've played with and seen play for a few years and he's definately one of the many unsigned seniors that doesn't get looks due to what school he plays at...He's had 2 straight .300+ seasons, hitting 3 HR's last year and continued to improve his defense, he also has good size at 6'0" 180.

Brandon Reeves is also a name I'd like to throw out there...

West has some scrappy little boys on their team this year.

it doesn't really matter because even a zero ay UNC-A is still a lot less than say a 50% at most D-1 private schools... and I dont know of many 50% schollies. Full ride baseball ath $ is almost unheard of. Really good would be 20-30%. Most are 0-10%... so the moral to the story is

there is far more $ in academics for male athletes than athletic $. so boyz keep yer grades up: baseball talent, + 3.5 GPA and +1100 SAT (1250 is golden) will serve whoever writes the checks quite nicely.

also positions matter: pitchers, middle if, outfield, catchers and corners are allocated ath $ in roughly that order i'm thinking.

    grades grades grades.

    PS- way to go Wes!

    How does it work?

Does the athletic department assist the player with applying for this academic aid? Point him in the right direction? How does it work?

This varies by institution. There isn't any pat, standing answer.

In the old days, a lot of schools tucked away some academic money for their athletes. A good student-athlete would come along and the AD/Coach could direct some academic aid his/her way. That's not allowed anymore. In fact, if it happens, the school and student could both be in hot water.

This day/age, the student-athlete must compete for academic money with the general student population (NCAA Regulation). The AD's office can get you started and help get you in the pipe-line, but policies vary incredibly from institution to institution.

If you have a specific question about a specific college, you can generally get an answer from the admissions folks. Most people on the board can speak from personal experience only, which is limited.

There are guidelines concerning academic assistance too, but these concern scholarship blending. Scholarship blending is taking some athletic money and some academic money. In order to stay in the good graces of the NCAA, schools won't offer you both athletic and academic money unless you meet the NCAA criteria. For D1, it's: 3.5 unweighted GPA in the core academic courses, top 10% of graduating class, 1200 SAT. For D2, it's: 3.2 unweighted GPA in the core academic courses, top 20% of graduating class, 1150 SAT. You have to meet at least one test in order to be able to blend.

This doesn't mean that a school can't give academic money at a lower standard. It does mean that, if the school does, then the student can't accept both the academic offer and the athletic offer and must make a choice.

    ----------------
All that being said, when you apply to a college, most of them will automatically put you in the running for any academic offers that you may qualify for. Good luck !!!!!
