My daughter and myself got a real treat after a UNC pitching clinic yesterday. We watched 1 great current college pitcher and 1 great former college pitcher in a practice session at UNC. Crystal Cox and Dana Sorenson (pitched in 2 college world series) from Standford U put on a show. Unbelieveable!!!! Everything was so sharpe, crisp, spins on the ball were so tight that you could not even see the red seems on the ball and put the ball exactly where they said they would put it. Just makes you realize how good you have to be to play at that level. TV or even watching in the stands at a game does not do them justice. Now being on the field 10 feet away while they are throwing, WOW!!! My daughter stood there with her mouth wide open the whole time. Truely unbelievable!!! :laugh1:

It is nice to see recognition of the hard work and dedication these atheletes have to get to the top D1 level. Most people do not see the workouts for 5 plus days a week. How many young girls in high school are willing to skip a Friday night out to go hit, field, or pitch; not to mention speed and agility training or strength training. I truely believe the level of dedication makes the difference and that is what it takes to get to the ACC or any other top D1 team and conference.

ACC ball will be great this year. I wouldn't be surprised to see them move up in the national rankings in a few years.

It was truely amasing to see those 2 pitch up close. I am so glad my daughter was there to see that. She has ambitions of going to the next level and it was so good for her to see that. You are so right about the number of players willing to give up a Friday night to work. I don't know of anyone putting that kind of time in my area. My daughter already gives 2 nights a week to drive 40 minutes for pitching lessons not to mention the other days working on our own pitching and hitting. I applaud all the hard work put in by all these young players.

Keep up this work ethic and develop the talent so doors open for you. I do not know how old you daughter is, but make the hard work as fun as you can and build her confidence that she can do it. I always believed in some goof off time to lighten up a practice. If hitting, switch sides. If pitching, try the other hand. Then just laugh at the results whether good or bad. A big smile and confidence always produces more success.

She is young, an 09 grad but works extremely hard and keeps up with the big gals pretty good. I do try to make it fun for her though. Sometimes I will pitch to her and let her tell me what I am doing wrong. She don't know it she is learning through this also.

Had to get in on this one. If CFBALL is high on kid she must be pretty good. But 09 means she is an 8th grader right?? How many 8th graders know what they want? Not many......... and yes those Friday nights and Saturday nights are going to start being more important. Then comes summer and its every night. Ball takes a back seat. Proms, debs, parties, boyfriends, job, car.......all are tough obsticles. Where does ball fit????? All these things are getting ready to happen in the next year or so for an 8th grader. Seen some talent and seen some pushy dads. The dads want it more than the kids. Want to hit...want to throw.....etc. constantly. The kid is driven away. Also seen some pushy obsessed dads that have pushed so hard the kids say yeah to hitting, fielding, what ever just so the dad doesn't blow up. Kids will say, "I'd rather stay and swing this bat than listen to the mouth". Seen this in both boys and girls. Its like Cardinal said.....make it fun!!!!!!! And let the ball be on the kids terms. Sports is year round but I believe kids need time off. If the kid doesn't mention ball for a month then it means they didn't want too. I don't care how good they are or want to be. Let them be kids. If somebody is 14 or 15 they know what it takes to get to college and play ball if they have seen some games or been to camps. They don't need help figuring that out. These are just some thoughts I had after Cardinal mentioned making it fun, dad said they work hard and ball rotation and seeing what it takes etc......I just got to rambling on about some things..... If dad is pitching coach....try this.......hide the balls, bats whatever and just see how long it takes for her to say lets go. If she takes lessons take her to her next one then don't set up another one. Tell whoever you'll call them. Don't say another word about softball until kid ask you to set up a lesson. Younger kids are soooo wishy washy. They change from one day to the next and they do feel parental pressure as well as peer pressure. Let them decide. Hey.... but who knows you may have a special one and that dream might come true..... Just make sure its her dream and not dads.

This 8th grader knows what she wants. All those things you mentioned we make room for. If you read an earlier post we make it fun. This is not my dream but hers. She aks me to throw between lessons. She asks me to throw batting practice to her. She helps setup her own lessons weekly. She plays flag football with her friends at the YMCA and they have their last practice tonight before their first game. She wants to go to her pitching lesson first then to flag football. HER DECISION not mine. She didn't want to miss a lesson. Sometimew we get are not in the door at home 5 minutes and she has her glove saying come on lets go throw some. Now does that seem like I am being a pushy Dad?? She works hard because she wants to work hard. My daughter don't need my help figuring out what it takes either, she already has done just that. Thanks for the advice but I think she is OK. This is HER dream and not DAD's. I am just the support for her.
