    Combining Sports and College studies

My son has been at two schools and both handled it differently the first did have mandatory study halls for the freshman the entire year. Tutors were readily available thru the school, not the athletic dept. though they may have been arranged if needed.

The second school did not have a mandatory study hall that I know of, but the school did have excellent tutoring programs and I was very impressed with everyone I met on campus' willingness to help. Like others have already expressed if a kid works at it he shoud make it.

Most teachers are readily available by email and a laptop with a wireless service for the bus trips makes it easier for sure I'm told (he didn;t have to travel last spring as he was redshirted). As a reference my son was a B+ student in HS and scored 980 as his best score on the SAT. He has a 3.35 average in college and has carried 16 credits each semester. He plans on probably carrying only 13 this spring and will take 1 summer school course.

There are websites that kids visit which allow them to rate their teachers and my son's friends use them heavily.

I would think that coaches, insructors and admin would be on the same page with the playing schedule. Understand that some may not supprot certain teams or the athletic program. I would think that if a student is in good standing with the grades. Being in class would be something that would be excused and time given to make up work assigned during that time. As these sports are representing the school and that representation drives enrollment and funds into the school.

    The bottom line

is it is the players responsiblity to make sure he gets it done. Of course there will be people and resources available to help the players out. But it is up to the player to take advantage of those resources and put in the work to get it done. The player has to manage his time and put in the work and take advantage of all the resources available.

It will not matter how many tutors he has at his disposal or what kind of structure is in place if he is not determined to put in the work needed. Bottom line it falls on the shoulders of the player himself to get in done.

Re-reading this thread brought a story to mind about how baseball and academics have to coexist...and sometimes bump into one another.

The morning of my son's last start against the University of Miami, he had to take a 4-hour exam in one of his major courses. The night before, he'd been in the library until about 2:00 AM studying for the exam. At 12:00 noon, he left the classroom. At 3:00 PM, he threw the game's first pitch.

An ideal way to prepare to face one of the nation's toughest college lineups? Not by a longshot; but, it's the sort of conflict/compromise college athletes have to be prepared to encounter and overcome if they sign up for the "ride."

Most kids take a minimum load during their season...& then load up in the summer & off-semester. But that doesn't erase the pressure of staying on top of things.
