Ty Buttrey and Corey Seager move up PG rankings

You're the best Prep. I always look forward to reading all of your posts. They are enlightening and, many times, entertaining. To me, you are like the Godfather of TBR.

Have not had the good fortune of watching Buttrey pitch, but have heard about the dominance of this young man and have been impressed with how he's "handled" some awfully good teams. Would be interested to see how you all would compare him to Brody Koerner, the ace for Robinson who has 2 no-hitters this season. Koerner is legit - doesn't hit 94 as far as I know, but has command and one of the best deuces I've seen at the high school level.

As far as Seager, you can't use enough superlatives to describe how good this kid really is. I coached against him for 2 years and then saw him once this year --- simply has no real weaknesses. As was said earlier, kid has lightning quick hands, pop to all fields and rarely has a bad at-bat.....and when he does I suspect it's more from boredom at the high school level than anything else. At SS (and I would guess they'll project him at 3B at the pro level), he is smooth....loose arm, good hands and much better range that you'd think when you see a 6-3 kid in the middle.

Simply put, he is the real deal - best overall player I've see in 13 years as a former varsity coach. Add to that the fact that he comes from a great family, carries himself with class, is by all accounts a great teammate......and works as hard on his own as any player you'll see....and you have the makings of a potential superstar at the next level.

His oldest brother Kyle is tearing it up as the #5 hitter and starting 3B for the Mariners in the bigs (and is on the all-star ballot, by the way).....and everyone you talk to says Corey is BETTER.....so it will be interesting to see what the future holds for this kid.

 

It's hard to compare; Brody is a little more polished and mature pitching-wise, imo. Ty Buttrey has a greater upside: size, velocity and is just starting to reach new levels. I wouldn't be surprised to read that Buttrey hits the century mark in a few years.

The thing you have to keep in mind is that Buttrey has accomplished something very, very few pitchers EVER do. In less than a year, the young man went from cruising at 82-83 to reaching 95...that is unheard of...and truly remarkable. Plus, I believe that Buttrey has a lot left in his arm (health-wise.)

You see so many outstanding HS pitchers who have been throwing hard and pitching a lot (many since LL days) that when they reach college, they find they have arm issues. It is all too common.

Keith Law's latest rankings of the top 100 prospects for the 2012 draft have Seager at 21, Buttrey at 34 and Alex Wood at 61.

 

Not everyone. I'm just a Kyle fan period.

I will admit that I have not had the "privilege" to have watched Corey as much as I saw Kyle. And don't get me wrong, I completely agree about both Seager boys being great people, they are truly class acts. But IN MY OPINION, I believe folk are more excited about Corey's upside, his potential, his being 6'4", being strong, great hands, sweet swing, that work ethic, class all around,,,,,,, sure he's got unlimited potential. And his family knows I truly wish him the best.

However, IN MY OPINION, what separated his older brother Kyle from everyone else, is that Kyle had the same sweet swing, great hands, great work ethic, but Kyle had the uncanny ability to come thru in the CLUTCH so many times. I simply haven't seen anyone else at the amatuer level come thru in the clutch as much as Kyle did, not even close.

 

Btw, and I certainly don't mean to turn this into a Kyle thread, but like someone else said, Kyle "IS" on the MLB allstar ballot, and remember everyone gets 25 votes. Be sure to give the local boy your support, thanks.
