Being from the South, I try my best to rally around the collegiate southern teams, particularly if they make a run for the college World Series.

For the last two years, I have tried my best to root for the Georgia softball team at the World Series. Try as I may, I just can't seem to enjoy their brand of softball. They have a great hitting line-up, top to bottom, their defense is stellar, and they have "capable" pitching. Should be easy to root for them, right?

Here's my issue: All that SMILING they do really gets on my nerves. I can understand loving to play the game, but isn't all that smiling a little bit weird??? Heck, the 1st baseman looks like the damn Joker (Batman's arch-rival) with her painted-on grin. It's kinda creepy.

How do you all feel about all the smiling? Optimistic, positive, and uplifting? Or, does it get on your nerves? After a lot of thought, I've decided it REALLY gets on my nerves. Guess I'll pull for Tennessee. Go Vols!

    Anyone care to share?

i did not notice this when they played Cal but I suspect that it is a coaches order. Over the years I have seen scenarios where girls are expected to smile wouldn't matter if they broke their leg! I had a thread about this some time ago where i felt it was a double standard for girls... that boys were allowed to display emotion and compete as "men" but girls were expected to always skip back to the dugout after a strikeout for example and immediatley begin cheering on the next batter... I still feel like girls are not allowed to compete in the same manner boys are.

I won't get into the cheering thing too much as I always felt it just went along these same lines but I will say i think it interferes with a legitmate oportunity to study the game, the pitcher and the situation.

I will shut up now before i get into more hot water! :square:

I believe she could have put a ball in one of their ear's last night. The way they were holding up the game and smiling...... But UGA won. Bet we see a rematch of that one.

I've seen it for the last 4 years and the reason i've seen it is because they win and are on TV alot. Like it or not, if smiling to the point of arrogance gets you to the college world series year after year, I say smile like a feeding mule in a brier patch!

.....that smile is REAL!!!! And I loved watching that ball sail out of the park! Yep, the holier than thou D1 player of the year is human and UGA is hitting like they're saying "cheese" getting a picture taken.

If my kid was playing in the Womens College World Series then I am sure she would be smiling like a Cheshire cat too. I love their enthusiasm. Freshman pitcher Owen's had a great debut and you can't sneeze at M. Wiggins performance at bat. Last but not least...when you are beating the returning champs (Washington) against the 2009 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year (Danielle Lawrie), wouldn't you grin?

...M. Wiggins is fun to watch, smiles and all, I'm watching the UT/UGA game now and the announcers, (who BTW, need to learn when to apply their knowledge of the game and shut up when they go out on a limb making statements that are full of sh*!). Wiggins has less than 10 K's all year, thats strong!

the SS; I forgot her name

Ga. softball got on my wrong side a couple of years ago when they had a SS that literally between each & every pitch would go up to the pitcher and say something or slap gloves or high five or something. Now that was not necessary and did get on my nerves! silly I say.
