    Path taken by the runner.......

....is what you guys should consider. If the catcher is up the line without the ball, then the runner has the baserunning lane period. If the catcher is blocking the plate, and by the umps opinion, said catcher is allowing an angle or room for the runner to get to the plate, i.e. wide spread legs, fielding the ball inside the line and carrying off the plate the runner, ......those are the avenues for a catcher or for that matter anyother fielder to "block" the bag in what now is how to defend a position without the ball. I personally think that the obstruction rule sucks! And now that I've seen how much the interpretation of the rule is Fd up,...well, lets just say, its hard to argue the beauty of a play at the plate, perfect throw from the outfield, stud catcher, holding down the fort, BAM!.........runner out or safe, ....don't matter when the pure quality of plays that we grew up on fall into place .....uhhhh, without the ump getting involved beyond yelling "you're out!" Let 'em play!

    Yankees vs Red Sox tonight

I cannot believe that Joe Morgan in the bottom of the 2nd inning on the leadoff bunt in the inning actually said that "a tie goes to the runner" on the banger at first base that the umpire called save.

THAT IS A BASEBALL MYTH: the runner must beat the ball to be safe. The replay showed he was out. Ties do not go to the runner.

    One Base or Two?

In the JST this week, twice there were PO attempts by the pitcher that the ball went out of play. While they look similar they were not, and the Blues had it right!

The first case, the ball from the pitcher's PO attempt sailed over the head of the 1B, and the runner was awarded one base when the ball rolled under a fence and out of play.

In the second case, (coincidentally same crew, different night but many of the same fans who had it wrong!) the PO attempt went off the glove of the 1B before the ball rolled under the fence and out of play. Runner was advanced two bases because the ball was deflected by a player out of play.

    Good job Blues!

    Tie goes to the ???

Stretchy, I was literally yelling at the TV when Joe Morgan said that... I am a Yankees fan so I'm not going to go into whether he was out or safe - besides we can't hear the ball being caught and the runners foot hitting 1st.

One from the rubber Two from the field

Ironically you can have a one base award on a PO attempt if the pitcher is in front of the rubber when he whirls and throws to first base or a two base award if he steps back off the rubber and throws to first.

Correct. I should have added that he threw from the pitching plate.
