The umpires so far this season have been great. Today they called the middle school game well. But two new rules inconsistently. Anybody else run into this?

    1) The umpire tells our player that his BBCOR 31" Marucci Cat 5 is illegal.
    2) The umpire said nothing their team's catcher wearing 4" of eye black just like Bryce Harper.

Number #1 was legal. #2 should have been an ejection. And the umpire should get 2 weeks suspension for not enforcing it. Unless the rules apply only to HS.

    Rough day?

    1. BBCOR 31" Marucci Cat 5 is legal...the 33" is not. This is for Varsity and JV games only. Each school system defines their bat rules for middle school baseball. If the umpires did not allow the bat it may have been a school system rule...but I doubt it, most likely they didn't bother reading the memo in full. FYI NFHS decertified the Reebok Vetor TLS 33" today.

    2. Eye black shall be a short swipe under the eye...can not "swipe" it up or down. Same in middle school, JV and Varisty. It's only a disqualifcation if the player refuses to remove or make the eye black legal.

On a side note, the term ejection is only used for an unsporting act. All other acts that would remove a player from the game by rule are termed disqualifications...per NCHSAA

    Not really rough

"Rough Day?" Not really. Good weather. Got the field in good shape. 10 run ruled by the 4th. All kids played. My son hustled, dove and got dirty.

Felt bad for the other coach, the bat owner parent, and the confused umpire.

Bat issue did cause stress for the parent who shelled out $200+ after they found out the rules late, scrambled and paid full price for the 31" bat. Ump told his son couldn't use it. Parents knew the rule on the 33". Coaches did too. But our AD and the Umps didn't and didn't have anything in writing. So when faced with the dilemma, we got the AD to speak with the umps. Player was allowed to use it. After Ump ran to his vehicle to surf the web? Or make a call, or pee in the bushes? Not sure. 10 min delay to start the game.

On eye black...agreed. But the powerpoint says "ejection". Page 49. Was just curious if they were taking it seriously.
