In a Softball game today, the umpires said they could not stay on the field and continue officiating a game that had gone 3 innings with 15 or more runs scored. They claimed this was a NC state rule, that the game would be over at that point. If I'm not mistaken this was an experimental rule this year, meaning both coaches had to agree in order for it to be enacted. The losing coach wanted to continue play for her girls to gain more experience. The Umps denied her request. Does anyone know the facts on this rule for this year and the years to come?

I may be mistaken, but we were told at the beginning of our season that each game had to go 5 innings no matter what the score. After 5 innings if a team is ahead by 10 or more, the game is called.
I don't know the official rule, I just know what we were told and we have played by the 5 inning rule all year.

Both coaches must agree to this before the game, and should be asked in the pregame meeting. If a coach does not agree, the umpires cannot force a team to stop. The only rule madated by the state is the 10 run rule after 5 innings.

well that's what we thought. both coaches agreed to use the 5 inning rule, but the umps would not stay on the field after 3 and 15 runs scored. just hope because of the umps wrong ruling that it won't be counted as an incomplete game or something, and come back to bite em on the you know what.

coach needs to have AD report the incident to the booking agent and make sure that doesn't happen again.

sometimes you run into a few umpires who actually shouldnt be employed to officiate anything........education is the key.
