    Umpires in NC

Although I do not know for sure what happened at the tournament with the officials, I can agree on certain levels that some of the officials have a VERY short fuse. With me, I expect that because most of them know who I am and what I do, so that can bring a certain amount of intimidation. I don't intentionally go out to try to intimidate the officials, but I have a standing rule for my players, that they will in no way react to an umpire's call. That's my job. As for parents and other people making comments from outside the field, they have that right. They paid their money to enter the fields and as long as they do not make any threatening statements, the officials should ignore it. To be quite honest, some of the comments are funny and in most cases you can fill a book with the knowledge the fans don't have. The bottom line is, if an umpire accepts the assignments for the tournament, knowing what the compenstation is, he should give it his very best and not umpire to the amount he is getting paid. It upsets me more to see officials on the field that you can tell, are there just to make the money and are just counting the minutes until the game is over. Rick is working very hard to try to improve the quality of officials in NC. It cannot be changed over night and everyone has to realize that there are so many different tournaments going every weekend, that it spreads the pool of good officials very thin. Let's give him our support and any assistance that he might need to pull this off. People like Robert are trying to help also. I will even try to help when I'm available (not coaching that is), because you should not be fast to criticize without the willingness to help make it better.

Most umpires bring this stuff on themselves. If they would just act like a reasonable person most of this stuff would not happen. Yes, every now and then a coach gets out of hand and must be dealt with...sometimes harshly, but a good, professional acting umpire can usually not let it get that far. If more umps would only say "I might have missed that one" most coaches will leave it alone.

    UMPS

I agree with you whole-heartedly, but the truth of the matter is that some people, whether they are umpires or in other professions, cannot accept any kind of citicism. That's human! But to allow you ego to causew you to react to circumstances, that quite franky are out of your control, is unexceptable. I have been a Division I official for 31 years, and if I were to allow outside comments or even comments from coaches control my emotions, I need to find another profession. But sadly, the people that you see umpiring these weekend tournaments, NEED the money. And that's why they do it. Is it right? NO. But until we have a pool of officials deep enough to draw from and the ability to exclude the type officials that are in question; we have to deal with it as best we can. I can assure you that 95% of the people out there and most of the coaches would not trade places with the official. Does this make their actions right? Of course not. But as I said earlier, before people criticize, they need to try to bet a part of the solution.
