UNC's Assistant Coach Chad Holbrook to USC

    A records request sent to UNCW and the other public schools whose teams qualified – UNC-Charlotte, UNC-Chapel Hill, N.C. State and East Carolina – showed a wide discrepancy in salaries, but not an unexpected one.


    The three schools with football – UNC, N.C. State and ECU – all pay their baseball coaches more than $100,000 a year. Those schools, respectively, have budgets of $58 million, $42.6 million and $25 million. UNCC ($9 million) and UNCW ($7.8 million in revenues from the last reporting period) are far behind because they don’t have as many money-making sports.
    UNC coach Mike Fox, whose team is coming off consecutive trips to the College World Series, makes $135,000 annually, but his contract is the one-year variety; it’s interesting to note that when Fox was hired 10 years ago, his salary was $50,000.


    East Carolina coach Billy Godwin makes $102,500 this year, with the salary increasing $10,000 per season through the end of the contract in 2011. Godwin also receives $5,000 if his team qualifies for the NCAA tournament. N.C. State’s Elliott Avent makes $101,807 in a deal that runs through 2010. Charlotte’s Loren Hibbs, whose team has made the past two NCAAs, makes $60,000 and operates on a one-year deal.
