Anybody got any advice on the Perfect Game WWBA Underclass World Championship in Fort Myers, FL, October 3-6? I know some juniors who received invitations to play for a Perfect Game team in the event, but I'm not sure how to advise them. They would miss the Friday and Monday of school (Oct. 3 and 6), flying down Thursday night and back Monday night. The invitation says the event is presented by Perfect Game and Baseball America, and is intended to be the underclassman version of the Jupiter, FL event later in October.

We were very impressed with the PG folks at the WWBA Junior Championship at East Cobb last summer -- according to the contact at Perfect Game, these players were identified at that event.

I hate to advise any kids -- particuarly high school juniors, to miss two days of school, but this sounds like an opportunity they shouldn't pass up.

Why don't you try posting your question on the High School Baseball Web's "Showcase" message board?

I share your view that the Fords, who own and run Perfect Game, are good people; but, they've allowed the number of showcases they sponsor to grow to the point that turnout has become very uneven...from a reported low of ~10 recruiters at the January, underclassman showcase to the 500+ scouts and recruiters at the October, Jupiter tournament. Since I have no direct experience with the October showcase for underclassmen, I don't know what to expect in the way of turnout.

The Underclassman event was a good event last year. The overall attendance of coaches was not as high as the summer or Jupiter event. Not sure if the new dead period during September will positively affect the attendance, in terms of wanting to see people they might in past years, seen already. The missed school days are a concern, but if you do not plan to miss other days due to tournaments, this one will get you exposure that you will not get at a local or regional fall tournament. Plus if by chance your team doesn't get to the final 8, you will probably be done Saturday anyway.

It all seems to be a "crap shoot" with alot of these type events. As Prepster stated there are soooo many now to consider. From our experience this is worthy of strong consideration.

P.S. "IF" flying vs. driving is an option, there are good fares to be found in some cases if purchased before 9/6, and this certainly cuts down on your time away and the players ability to be ready for school when they get back. Good Luck!
