    twisted

Actually, without twisting it - I said the rules are the rules and there always will be players and coaches that will try to get around them.
There are also different reasons why.
NOT speaking out of both sides of mouth I OBJECTIVELY said that sometimes those reasons MAY justify the exception - NOT making any judgement as to whether it was right or wrong.

Further, I said that in my experience, I have only see it happen in Showcase Events (sorry to insult anyone by lower - level, simply making a comparison between a "State or National Tournament" and a regular Showcase event that has no "championship game" or brackets).

However, I will say now, MHO is that while still not "to the letter of the law" they are definately excusable if it comes with the blessing of the team / coach. And it is simply for the player to get even more time in front of college coaches. I would suppose that in those instances, as long as the player had not played in a qualifier, a release could be obtained, the player could be added to the new teams roster for that tournament then be released by that team after the tournament and be picked back up by their original team. Seems like alot of needless work to satisfy the paperwork demands made by a few - with the entire purpose to be to help the player play ball in college. It only helps a player and no one gets hurt. BTW, my DD almost did it once (with our coach's blessing - actually it was his idea) because a certain college wanted to see her play, we wound up not going because she decided she didn't want to go there anyhow.

I will say that the whole roster thing is one issue but have experienced very corrupt tournament directors running tournaments where they were involved with a team that was in the tournament (NOT ASA Sanctioned) "bending rules" and influencing umpires to assist their team winning the tournament - simply for a trophy! Deniability in those instances reduce the overall credibility of the game. No good will ever come of that.:smash: Shame on them. But that kind of stuff is old news and has been talked about till its dead.

It has also been my experience that the harshest critics and folks who complain the loudest are usually those who have the dirtiest laundry. Or maybe have lost the most players? I would guess that if you lose players to other teams on a regular basis, you might want to look to yourself as why. My suggestion to the "organizational conspiracy theorists" is to volunteer with the organization that you have issue with and become a part of the solution to your troubles. It is easy to criticize and tear down, hard to follow your heart and take action.

Sorry, This thread is about coaches recruiting players. Several posters on here that are much more knowledgable and wise than I have clearly stated that it is a despicable practice and further said "if you sleep with dogs, you will get fleas".
Good life lesson there for sure.
I wholeheartedly agree and am definately done with this. Heck, ITS FOOTBALL SEASON!!!!

Sorry, This thread is about coaches recruiting players.

Yes it is and the roster situation and organizations not making everyone go by the rules directly effects coaches recruiting players. If you have rules they should be applied to everyone.

Sorry about the paperwork but rules are there for a reason, "demands by a few", it is not a few it is ASA demanding it because it is a RULE. I believe that the player can be released and picked back up by her original team ONE time. If there is no paperwork the player could jump teams every week (which does happen btw). If you think the paperwork is needless go to ASA and get the rule changed and until then do the paperwork. It is people that have your way of thinking that pick and choose which rules they want to follow that make the system not work. You say that sometimes there are reasons to "justify" exemptions. That is not up to you to decide at least that is what the cop told me when he stopped me for speeding aka breaking the rules and I told him that I could "justify" it because I was late for work. EVERYONE should have to follow the rules.

Props to Fishball. Awesome post Bro! Good coaches can always see the good (or lack of) mechanics in a kid, and a bad coach can absolutely ruin them.

But the reality is there are far to many bad ones, Daddy Ball and otherwise. I have heard of and seen many unethical things during my time in youth sports, but this is the first time I've ever seen you BIG DOGS complain about it like this.

Things must be getting really bad for you guys to complain about it publicly like this. Desperate measures for others during desperate times.....and what continues to amaze me the most is that coaches stand around scratching their heads and wonder why they can't find kids!

I hope you are sitting down dawg because I don't want to shock you, but ASA tournaments are not exempt from this. It happens everywhere when the tournament directors team is playing in the tournament. I believe in some sanctions it is against the rules for the tournament director's team to be in the tournament but those that think they are above everyone else think they can justify the exemption and do it anyway.

With all this focus on corruption, espionage, abductions, etc., some people have to be missing some great softball.

An outsider reading all of this is probably headed straight to the soccer field. Even long-time coaches may be headed to HS or maybe even back to rec ball.

I'm hoping most of the drama is less than 5-10% of teams involved. I would be really surprised if it's greater than 5%!

    Peace out!

I agree with softball phreak. Softball is a great sport. We had some bumps in the road along the way, but it was necessary. It got my DD to college ball and taught us all some life lessons along the way. Met a lot of fine people and people that will know for a long time. I don't understand why a lot of you want to" ban" coaches from volunteering because they asked some kids to come to a tryout. I mean, Do you own these players? With all the expense that we have to pay, it should be the choice of the family who they want to play for. It is up to the coaches to be ethical when it comes to offering free stuff of paying their way. That is and should be against the rules. I hope that we can all look at the bigger picture.

The coaches that people are referring to are the kind that recruit a girl in the middle of her committment to another team. Once her committment is done then by all means go to where you think the grass is greener. A coach should encourage a girl to live up to the committment she made to her team and to think about how her actions will effect her teammates. There are players and parents who get mad because the coach may play someone else at "their" position for a game or two, but if he doesn't and the player decides to leave midstream, if it is a key position it can devastate the whole team leaving them with no one that can play that position. A coach is then forced to rob another team or be done, leaving 9 or 10 players with no place to play. It is as simple as do unto others and think about your teammates. It is very selfish on the part of the recruiting coach, the player, and the player's parents. To abandon your teammates is not a good lesson to be teaching players and if they continue to do it in the game of life, I don't see them getting very far. Believe me they will think more of you as a coach if you encourage them to to the right thing and do right by people.

I agree that a coach should not try to lure a player mid-season under any circumstances. If a coach needs a player to fill a role (injury, etc), he should go to a younger player playing up or a rec. player. That was always a problem for our teams. How many players do you go with? Probably 11-12 for the younger teams(14u),(12u) (10u) down. You need more players for the Showcase teams (13-16 players). It is a difficult balance for the coaches because you need enough in case of injuries, but to keep everyone happy.

    Losers

I think loser is the best title for a Coach who lures players to their team at any time when they are doing it to boast their ego. A coach is exactly what the title is "Coach" I feel that their are way to many guys out their for the wrong reasons. I am where I am for the girls period! I work with the girls to develope their skills and get them prepared to compete at the collegiate level. Nothing chaps me more than for another Coach to sweet talk a player of mine and have the Gall to stand behind the fence while we are playing to watch a girl that I have worked so hard to develope. Then he makes false promises to get her to leave my team.

looking for a 18U A level pitcher for Showcase. Please contact me if you know anyone looking a team.
