Update: Computer rankings of NC's travel teams (March 28)

    Below are the updated computer rankings of North Carolina's travel teams through the weekend of March 22-23.

    There are now 290 teams ranked, up from 231, as some 60 teams made their debuts last weekend. Those numbers should continue to rise last weekend. Fast pitch softball is alive and well in the Tar Heel state.

    Teams are ranked in five divisions – 8U, 10U, 12U, 14U, HS. The rankings consider results from all tournament sanctioning bodies.

    The rankings model used is similar to those that to produce RPI ratings for NCAA basketball teams or BCS rankings for college football.

    The rankings are significantly more accurate this week than last because of more comparative data. But it's still early, and there remain isolated groups of teams that have mixed and mingled with other teams enough to sort out how they truly compare. But I'm encouraged.

    The average runs scored in North Carolina travel-ball games this season is 10.88, or 5.44 per team.
    The average score of winning teams is 8.16
    The average score of losing teams is 2.74.
    (Conclusion: There are a lot of mismatches).
    Out of 743 recorded games, there have been 138 shutouts.
    The Lady Lightning East of Clinton (HS) and the Diamond Divas of Zebulon (10) lead the state in shutouts with four apiece.
    Out of 743 recorded games, there have been 251 instances of a team scoring at least 10 runs, more than one in three.
    Runs per game increases as you go higher in age division (as expected) –

    Average runs per game per team:

    8u – 8.58
    10u – 5.59
    12u – 5.36
    14u – 5.31
    HS – 4.19

    IMO, that's about fewer errors and walks. Might actually have more hits, certainly more extra-base hits as you age up, but better and older teams don't beat themselves with porous defense and wild pitching the way that lesser and younger teams do.
