    Below are the computer rankings of North Carolina’s travel teams through games of May 18.

    There are some pretty interesting developments. We have two new No. 1 teams, while two other No. 1 teams lost, but held on to their No. 1 rankings. Check out the summary of each division for more details on that.

    Weekly disclaimer --

    These are computer ratings using the scores of tournaments from all associations in North Carolina. The computer model is very similar to those that generate the BCS football rankings. They consider scores and margin of victory and strength of schedule. They provide ‘’the best mathematical explanation’’ for the scores of some 4,007 games for which Aunt Bee has recorded scores. There have been 43,986 runs scored in those games.

    Aunt Bee is not affiliated with any tournament organization or team and has no agenda except to make travel softball in the Tar Heel State more interesting to those who follow it.

    Key –
    W-L = won-loss record in bracket games and pool games that seed.
    RAT = Team’s rating. Subtracting one team’s rating from another provides a projected margin of victory if one played the other, not considering run rules.
    SOS = Strength of schedule, or the average strength of a team’s opponents.

    In what will be a controversial turn of events, the JC Clippers are the new No. 1 team in 8U after winning the USSSA’s 8U division last weekend in the little town of Micro, N.C.

    Now, as many of you know, the Clippers were unseated as the No. 1 team after the events of May 3, when the then-No. 2 Lady Tigers of Mount Pleasant drove across state and took two of three games from the previously unbeaten Clippers in Wendell. That knocked the Clippers to No. 3, behind the Tigers’ previous arch-rivals, the dreaded Knockouts of Asheboro.

    Well, now the computer has had a change of heart after the Knockouts ventured to Micro and was beaten decisively by the Clippers. All the Lady Tigers did last week was go 5-0 in the TopGun Concord, out-scoring their opponents 57-10.

    Let’s look at the resumes of these two 8U heavyweights. The Tigers are 2-4 against a South Carolina team. Otherwise, the three are unbeaten except when playing each other.

    Lady Tigers – Have a winning record against both the Clippers (2-1) and Knockouts (4-3) and every other tean in N.C. that they have played. However, the total run margins vs. those team are slim – 60-59 vs. the Knockouts and 22-20 vs. the Clippers. They’re 6-4 vs. the two (.600 winning PCT).

    JC Clippers – They’re 1-2 vs. the Clippers (20-22 run differential) but 2-0 vs. the Knockouts with a decisive run differential (24-9 after winning 14-4 and 10-5.) They’re 3-2 vs. the two (.600 winning PCT).

    The Carolina Attitude of Welcome won the NSA’s Cheerwine Classic in Burlington, beating the No. 1-ranked Green Machine of Stanfield twice. The tournament also included the No. 4 High Point Rockers and No. 7 Lady Tigers. But the Green Machine held on to its top ranking while the Attitude jumped two spots to No. 2.

    Much like the deal in 8U, the computer held back a team (the Attitude) that has winning records over all of its N.C. 10U opponents. Note that the Attitude has three losses vs. 12U teams, and the Machine has two losses to out-of-state teams. For in-state games, the Attitude is 15-3 (its other two losses to the No. 5 Razorbacks). The Machine is 17-2. The teams are undefeated against their common opponents, with the Green Machine winning against them more decisively. Hopefully the two will meet again.

    Meanwhile, the third-ranked Chaos 03 won a USSSA event in Micro, beating the No. 9 JC Clippers 03 in the final.

    The No. 1-ranked Cleveland Angels lost their first-round game 8-0 to the NRV Hurricanes of Virginia last week at the NSA’s Cheerwine Classic, but rallied for eight straight victories in the losers bracket to take the title. They beat the No. 3 Charlotte Starz Gold 1-0 and 3-2 to win it. The tournament had five Top 10 teams and 10 Top 20 teams entered. The NC Challengers 01 actually dropped a spot to No. 4 despite winning a 14U tournament in Cary.
