    Rankings through games of May 4 are below.

    These are computer ratings using the scores of tournaments from all associations in North Carolina. The computer model is very similar to those that generate the BCS football rankings. They consider scores and margin of victory and strength of schedule. They provide ‘’the best mathematical explanation’’ for the scores of some 3,075 games played this year.

    Aunt Bee is not affiliated with any tournament organization or team and has no agenda except to make travel softball in the Tar Heel State more interesting to those who follow it.

    Key –
    W-L = won-loss record in bracket games and pool games that seed.
    RAT = Team’s rating. Subtracting one team’s rating from another provides a projected margin of victory if one played the other, not considering run rules.
    SOS = Strength of schedule, or the average strength of a team’s opponent.

    There was a battle of No. 1 vs. No. 2 last weekend in Wendell, and we have a new No. 1 team - the Lady Tigers 05 of Mount Pleasant. The Lady Tigers won two out of three against the previously unbeaten JC Clippers 05 of Smithfield – 7-4, 11-15 and 3-2. The two 8U powerhouses each scored 21 runs off each other. It was the first time that the two teams had played this season, as they are on opposite sides of the state. The Lady Tigers have eight losses this season, but four have come vs. South Carolina teams, and they’ve avenged the other four. The new No. 2 team is the Knockouts of Asheboro. They’re 3-4 vs. the No. 1 Lady Tigers.

    The High Voltage of Hertford entered last weekend’s USSSA tournament in Wendell with a 1-8 record, but Aunt Bee still had the team ranked No. 37 because of their schedule – All nine opponents were ranked in the Top 25. The Voltage won the tournament, going 4-0 and moving up to No. 25. That included two wins over the No. 24 Pitt County Dynamite. The High Voltage, still with only a 5-8 record, demonstrate how Aunt Bee rewards teams that are competitive vs. good teams. In other 10U news, the No. 2 Chaos 03 of Goldsboro defended their high ranking with a pair of wins (6-5, 9-6) over the fifth-ranked Carolina Stealth of Burgaw in the Fayetteville TopGun event. Both teams retained their rankings. The Carolina Attitude/Frye jumped from No. 11 to No. 4 by winning the NSA’s event in Mooresville. The Attitude is 9-2 vs. Top 20 teams, including four victories last weekend over the runner-up Lady Razorbacks, who are ranked No. 6. Congrats also to other tournament champions, most of which moved up – Alexander Gold (#29 from #38), Surry Smack (#39 from #44), Lady Tigers 04 (#27 from #38) and the Diamond Divas (stayed #13).

    The NSA’s 12A division in Hickory attracted four of the current Top Five. It was won by the Cleveland Angels, who beat the NC Challengers in the final. Those teams are now 2-3. The third-place NC Vipers are No. 4, and the fourth-place Charlotte Starz Gold are No. 5. The top-ranked Lady Blues did not play.     With rankings re-worked today (Friday), the new No. 1 team is the Diamond Crushers Red. More on them later.

    The corrected rankings reflect the fact that Aunt Bee confused the NC Challengers 00 w/ the NC Challengers 99 in last weekend's NSA tournament in Hickory, where the 00 team split w/ eventual champion and the highly ranked Carolina Cardinals. The Challengers 00 moved in to the Top 10.

    The No. 2 Carolina Wild won in Cary (USSSA). The No. 3 Cardinals won in Hickory (NSA). The No. 7 Richmond Thunder won in Fayetteville (TopGun). The No. 8 Chaos won in Cary (USSSA). The No. 10 Triad Pride Blue won in Oak Ridge (GotGame). Other winners were the Eastern Diamondbacks (WFC), Pitt County Heartbreakers 00 (Greenville), Carolina Mash (Haw River), Beachwarmer Lady Tigers (TopGun) and NC Avengers (USSSA).

    Back to the Diamond Crushers -- They won two early 14U tournaments and have played and done well (second last week in TopGun Charlotte) in two high school tournaments since then. The Crushers and Carolina Wild present some issues for Aunt Bee as to which division to place them in the rankings. To be determined.

    In other scandals, Aunt Bee has no results from an April 5-6 ASA tournament held in Burlington, as the tournament director has declined to provide scores. If anyone played in that event (it was 14U only), please contact Aunt Bee. While those aren't the only scores missing, they are the most significant.
