Duke dog is correct on everything he says. A coach can only guarentee the money he has control of - athletic money. everything else is tied in with sat scores (many colleges has a minimun sat score that they will accept), graduating gpa, financial ability from the family, etc, etc. I know of two instances where a girl couldnt meet the gpa needed to attend that college, and they have gone elsewhere. But the point raised by most college coaches is that if they have spent the time to watch you, bring you in for official visits, tell you what they can possibly do for you, and you verbally committ . . . . stick with it or at the very least, tell the coach that you are considering another school. I must be old school, but to me, verbal is binding, I try to live with my given word, and thats how my dd was raised, and i hope she raises her kids to be the same way in the future (distant future i hope). not dubbing anyone, this has been a good thread, interesting takes by everyone. thanks everyone for their input.

From speaking to the players and the parents of the kids that committed in their Junior year, they all said the same thing. They are going to the school that they wanted to attend. Could they have received a better offer if they had waited?...maybe. But it didn't matter to them. It was the school that they wanted and they were glad to put the recruiting process behind them.

    Early Verbals

Hindsight is 20/20. The WCU situation is unfortunate. My DD is caught up in it now. You are all right in your different angles. BUT, a rule should be put in place to stop the pressure of forcing the kids to committ early or be passed over. In our case WCU was on her short list. They made the offer with a one week deadline or they were moving on to the next kid in line.
We asked for a 48 hour extension and it was denied. That is a lot of pressure on a 17 year old kid. As a parent we try to help, but,in the end, I wanted it to be her decision. Now , we wish we could have a do over ...
Very good offers have moved on down the road. Doors have all been closed. The competetion at the college level is tough to get the top prospects and getting an early verbal is what they all try to do...Close the sale as quick as possible and get that kid off the market..It's not a big deal until something like the WCU deal goes wrong.Yea Yea Yea Pick the school not the coach. We have all heard that before. And she did. But ,
Who wants to be in limbo of a not yet hired coach that may or may not even want you . I feel bad for all the 07 WCU recruits that are in limbo.
Just letting out some steam I guess....

I hear ya...I've never been a fan of players signing their junior years, but if they are going to the school of their dreams...what can you say?

I understand a college wanting an answer soon, so they can quickly move on to sign the next one on their list, if turned down, but 48 hours is not unreasonable.

I am of the school to listen to all of the offers and being honest with the recruiters of the offers made....but once one commits, I'm with cheeze on this.
