They're just getting started with their sports. I know they had to stop taking applications for next year untl Dec. because they were flooded. that should tell you something about market demand.

They have some 7 footers for basketball from outside the country. I hear they may not take many players next year and then I hear the other side. As with most things there wil be rumors.

I try to stay in touch and watch it closely. I think the biggest positives is they have strong leadership and good vision and goals.

What I am still wanting to see more of is the education side.

A concern is that they appear to only let the very gifted play more than one sport. It's not the typical HS experience, but that could be a good thing, depending on what you are looking for.

A concern starting to raise its head is that not many local coaches are lining up to play them since they are taking players from local school programs.

The academics are HIGHLY stressed. They are preparing these kids to meet NCAA requirements and to be able to get admitted into any division 1 college. The teachers are top notch and hand picked for their academic excellence. The kids go to class from 8 to 1. They have lunch from 1-1:45, then they go with their teams for workouts, training sessions, etc., for 2 hours. After workouts, they have a mandatory study hall from 3:45 to 5:45. The student teacher ratio is about 1:10 in each class.
They are going to break ground in the next couple of months for their new facility. It will be state of the art, similiar to the Hebrew Academy in Greensboro. The basketball team will have their debut in a tournament at Smith highschool in November.
Parents, if you want your kids to have a top notch prep education and be prepared physically, mentally, and emotionally to play division 1 sports, Veritas is the place.

Sounds pretty good. If they build anything like the Hebrew Academy it will be state of the art nice.

As to meeting NCAA admissons requirements, I would hope so. Those requirements are very low. In fact if your grades just meet or slightly exceed the NCAA requirements it is very difficult to get in any good schools unless you are an athlete.

My thoughts also. I would be more concerned about my kid being ready for the academics of college on his own. Sports make it a little easy. Maintaining grades with all the resources at D-1 schools for players. Team tutors, team study halls and others there to help if needed. Not to say that is a cake walk. But, they get you the help you need to be able to play. A regular student has to go get it for themselves. What happens if you get an injury that you can no long play? Are you ready to do it on your own? Just look at the return rate of regular students after their first year. It is tough and a reality check for a lot. Go here are compare what it takes to get in on your own. Then compare it with what the NCAA requires. Big gap. I would have to say. If the NCAA used to same entry requirements as the school does for a regular student. There would be a lot of changes in sports as a whole. http://collegesearch.collegeboard.com/search/sidebyside.jsp

As I said, I see the coach going back to school as a positive. Personally I think we should congratulate the coach.

I know it may seem like a cake walk, but these kids are working very hard. The NCAA changed the Division 1 requirements this year and unfortunately, many people don't know about this unless they are just now going through the recruiting process. The kids coming out of highschool actually have to have 16 core classes. I agree, it is easier for a kid to qualify for a college if they are on athletic scholarship, but I am going through that process now with my oldest son and baseball. He has a 3.0 GPA, which is not great when you consider getting into a division 1 school, but he meets all NCAA division 1 requirements, which are more than the required highschool courses to graduate. I think they are making strides to help this. At a baseball showcase yesterday, the coach said that NCAA divison 1 schools are going to start losing scholarships if they don't graduate 92% of their athletes (don't know how they factor in kids going pro early). Most colleges are starting to require tutoring and a close watch on the academic aspect of the students.
As for the comment about getting injured and having to make it on their own...that is true in all aspects of life. We never know what will happen tomorrow, so make the best of it today!
If you guys have any questions about Veritas, send me a message. We had a tough time deciding where to send my son to school, but we are glad we accepted the offer from Veritas.

    Not another basketball diploma mill

This is not another school where they bring in great athletes and pretend to send them to school. If you sat in on their classes you would find that they are being taught a NC Public School curriculum on steroids. The kids have study hall and tutoring every day from 4-6 except Wednesday. Not a single kid will have eligibility extended. This is a true academic sports academy. Think outside the box for once. There really is a school that combines high academics and top sports training. Ask any kid that goes there and you will see. The school is starting to get a lot of publicity now because people are seeing positive things coming out of it. They are starting to realize that the school is everything it says it is and more.
