Does anyone have any pointers on visits official and unofficial? Hopefully some of the people who have gone through can help the rest of us. Thanks in advance!

    NC-dad ... you need Prepster.

Most of the NCAA material up on the HSBBallWeb came from him. He is outstanding in this area. If you have a specific question, send him a P.M.

I'm only current at the D1 level. However, at that level, a player may visit a school at his family's expense anytime he wishes. During such an "unofficial" visit, he may meet and talk with the coaches.

A hybrid of the unofficial visit which has seen growing popularity over the last 5-10 years is the "Junior Day." There are about as many variations on Junior Day as there are schools, and not every program has them; but, generally speaking, a program will designate a day (usually in the spring) to invite recruits to visit at their own expense. Once there, the players and their families are usually given a tour of the campus and baseball facilities and have a chance to meet the coaches and many of the players. They may also be given tickets to a campus event such as a game. Families must pay for ALL other expenses.

"Official" visits are made at the university's expense and are highly regulated. Not to begin before September 1st of a player's senior year in high school, they usually take place on a weekend in the early fall and their duration is limited to 48 hours. The school may pay for the player's travel and his and his parents' meals and accomodations. The player and his parents may also be given complimentary tickets to on-campus events such as games.

A player is limited to five official visits, may take no more than one official trip to a school, and must give the program his official transcript and a standardized test score before or at the beginning of his visit. Most schools rely on his NCAA Clearinghouse registration to satisfy that requirement. (Something every NCAA-bound player should do at the end of his junior year in high school.)

A program may bring in no more than 25 players on official visits; and, if a player takes official visits in more than one sport, every visit counts toward his limit of 5.

Like NC, I'd refer you to the hsbaseballweb for additional information, as well as to its recruiting questions message board.
