Over the weekend I heard John Ahern (Providence '04 grad) may get a chance to play at South Carolina. Ran 6.7 sixty, Coach Tanner had him shag balls in the outfield during B/P to see his range and speed, arm strength, etc. John was the only guy out of 14 walk-ons that Coach Tanner asked to come back for the inter-squad scrimmages last week. Game one, John went 1-2. Game 2 he was 1-3 with an infield hit (there's the speed again). Haven't heard an update in a few days.

John was not recruited by anyone for baseball. Never made All-Conference as far as I know. He's at South Carolina because that's where he wanted to get an education. Now he's got a chance with one of the top teams in the nation. He may make it as a red-shirt the first year or he may not make it at all but it makes you wonder, if he has impressed the staff at South Carolina why did he not receive a single offer to play baseball anywhere?

I wonder how many walk-ons actually make the squad at D-1 schools?

In any case, good luck to one of our local boys.

We are SOOO proud of John!! We know he'll make the team. He is one of the nicest young men.

My son played showcase ball with him (and his twin brother, Chris, who signed with WCU) for two seasons. My hat's off to Kevin and Robin for raising two sport "studs.":applause::thumbup:

    Good luck, John!!

The reason I think schools didn't recruit him is that his arm was hurt during high school and they really didn't get to see the whole package. I think his arm will be stronger than it was before and he will have a very good chance to make the team and a chance to play. You know they have to use him as a pinch runner like providence but there is a good chance you will see him in the outfield.

    Wonder yes.....

remember John and Chris transferred in their 10th grade year! John elected to play or run track both years! As a 11th grader he was encouraged and given the opportunity to do (baseball as well) both. He and his Coach leaned towards track! I knew thme both and Chris moreso! They are both fine young men, and true athletes and competitors... May want to ask Coach H    A "sincere" best of luck go out to THEM BOTH!!! as for well, no comment...

Hey RedSouthpawMom.....welcome back. I can't wait to see Greg pitch this school year (except against one team). He has worked hard to become one of the best pitchers in Charlotte and kudos to you and Mr. RedSouthpaw for raising such a nice young man.

Braves.....thanks for the kind words regarding Greg. I am so looking forward to the spring HS season!! Should be a good one.

Sorry to hear that Braves, Jr. had to have surgery. Hope things went well and his recovery is progressing. So much for the fall showcase season, huh??

Looking forward to seeing him on the mound again!!

Thanks...everything went well. He should start back throwing in November. It will be the first time in over a year he will be able to throw without pain.

Spring season will be here before we know it :xyzthumbs
