McWhirter threw a very good ball game. I just hope he can hold pencil to do his school work today!! Earlier this week another player, I believe for Hopewell threw a complete game.

Someone help me understand.....as cold as it is during the Varsity games....it's the first game these young men have thrown this year.....Isn't asking a HS player to throw 100+ pitches (90+ in game plus 5-7 warm up pitches between innings= @135+ total for the game) a little unreasonable. Somehow I do not think this is in the best interest of the pitcher. I'm sure both of the young men that had complete games will play college ball somewhere....How is it in the best interest of these young men to throw that many pitches this early in the season?

I would imagine alot of that would depend on their off season program. It may not be especially balmy right now, but it is alot warmer than many previous years. Coaches should know their pitchers, especially returners, and will set their game plan to them.

hello idown22togo, surely you jest when you ask that question. It is all about WINNING!!
If the player doesn't say something and there are no parents jumping out of the stands, the coach acts like he is busy thinking about something else and it just "happens!!

    Regards,

All pitchers should be on strict pitch counts this early in the season. Have you ever seen a pro pitcher throw 6-7 innings during spring training?...and those guys are in great shape compared to a HS pitcher.

Could not agree more.....we put our guys on a pitch count for probably the first month. Varsity goes about 65-70 pitches and JV only about 45-50.

Granted even if you have a tough out of conference schedule you will get more benefits from not overworking guys and getting them quality innings against good teams regardless of the outcome. I am all for winning but not at the expense of ruining a guys chances for the games that really matter (i.e. conference and playoffs)

NW Cabarrus 8 East Rowan 6

Great game...East goes up 2-0 and then NWC explodes for 8 runs in the 5th highlighted by back to back HRs, including a grand slam by Weston Smith to dead center. East chips away and then with the bases loaded in the 7th, the East batter hits a scorcher to the second baseman who makes a fine play and NWC turns a game ending double play.

East coach ejected in the 6th inning
