    Charlotte Latin 13 Weddington 12

In the longest, ugliest game I have seen in a while Latin wins 13-12.

Weddington went up 5-0 in the top of the 1st. 45 minutes later at the end of the first they are down 6-5. Middle innings move along ok. Lots of walks, few errors etc. In the top of the 6th Weddington goes up 12-8, by the end of the 6th it is 13-12.

Top of the 7th with men on 2nd and 3rd John Mangum at the plate--he asks for time the ump CLEARLY says no, pitcher stops half way through his motion and does not deliver BALK, plain and simple. UMP has the audacity to say the hitter called for time out. Should be tie game, at least. Not the reason Weddington lost, but seriously this call was brutal.

Latin faught back all day even when down by a bunch twice. Showed good character for what I understand is a young team.

Didn't have pen and paper, and don't know the kids on Latin, but here is what I remember. someone from Latin can fill in the blanks.

2 or 3 HRs for Latin in timely situations.
Freshman Michael Massardo 3-4. 2 of his three hits were stung to gaps.

    Weddington

    Trescher 2-4, double, HR (1)
    Mangum 1-4, HR (1)
Honeycutt 1-4 with his first varsity hit
    Collins 3-5, two doubles

Jordon Newsome enters in relief in the 1st inning with 4 runs already on the board and bases loaded. Pitches a great game into the 6th. holding Latin to just 1 run until the 6th when he was just left in the game too long. Got tired and gave up a couple long balls to have the game tied at 12.

Ugly 3 hour game all around, but like I said, Latin down 5 at one point and 4 at another never quit. Weddington has scored 7 runs, 9 runs and 12 runs in three games and has one extra inning win to show for it. Can't score that many runs and not win ball games.

    weddington-latin game

Unless high school baseball rules have changed, that is not a balk. If anybody asks for time or yells time, it is not a balk if the pitcher stops his motion

    Rose vs Providence

That exact same thing happened in the Rose vs Prov game with 2 outs and an 0-2 count in the bottom of the 6th giving Rose the win.

I saw this exact same play at another game. In that game, the balk was called. I don't like it, but....it's a pitcher's responsibility to throw the pitch, unless the umpire calls time.

Here's why I don't like it. Umpires are making it a point of emphasis for batters to stay in the box. For years pitchers have been used to seeing a batter step out, ask for time and it was always granted---even when a pitcher was starting his delivery. There should be some consideration in the effect of adopting a new emphasis, when the intent of the rule is not to penalize the defense...but to speed up the game.

    you are correct

but all of these speed up rule need to be looked into... Offensive teams are penalized if their catcher is a good base runner and there is 2 outs. umps up here make the catcher leave the base for a base runner to speed up play... tell every pitcher to throw the ball every time and you won't get a balk called. there is no penalty for throwing a pitch that doesn't count..

True jd.....and this is the adjustment they MUST make. However, the point of emphasis was to speed up the game, not to create a "play" where an intentional distraction can cause a pitcher into thinking time was called.

I know that was not the case in the game I saw, and it is the responsibility of the pitcher to follow through with his pitch. But if the intent was to intentionally distract the pitcher resulting in a balk---that's not baseball.

so, in your interpretation of the rule, if the pitcher had thrown the pitch the ump would have had to call it a "no pitch?" Even though he did not give the hitter the time out, the hitter was still in the box and ready to hit.

sorry, but he would have called it a ball or a strike. There is no time out until the ump calls time out not the player. Since he had not given the time out it is a balk. In fact, the umps reason for not calling the balk WAS that he gave the time out. Unfortunately that was an excuse not the actual event. The only time out given must have been in his head were only he could hear it.
