    Fred T Foard 3 St. Stephens 2

Played in a steady drizzle, Foard got just enough hitting and great pitching again to defeat the Indians in the regular season finale. Aaron King was the winning pitcher going 5 1/3 innings scattering 5 hits, 8 Ks, and 2 ER. King also drove in the second run of the game with a base hit. Andrew Wyant entered the game with the bases loaded and one out in the 6th and got a sacrifice fly and a ground out to get out of the jam. Wyant pitched a scoreless 7th to earn the save.

Foard's bats were held in check by Patrick Johnson for the most part (10 Ks). JT Wharton led off the game with a triple and later scored while Tyler Buchanan and Chad Rothlin each added singles.

The Tigers finish the regular season (21-3, 15-1) as conference champs and have earned the only automatic bid for a 3A team in the CVAC.:trophy:

Next up will be the conference tournament which gets underway Monday at home against Newton.

Congratulations to Dice, Lilly, Wharton and company in clinching the CVAC title. Brings back good memories from the AAU / USSSA days. Perhaps we'll (TCR) see you down the road in the playoffs.

Ragsdale finished up the regular season Thursday night with a 14-3 win over Asheboro. Sounds like that smacked the ball around pretty good. If they can keep the bats alive like that with their pitching that have to be one of the favorites to make it to the state finals in Greensboro. Ragsdale finished up 22-1 overall and 11-1 in conference.

Next up is the Mid Piedmont Tourney and a likely third game witrh Eastern Randolph. Eastern is a very dangerous team and played Ragsdale to two 3-2 games - Ragsdale had to come back in both games. Ragsdale will get a bye being conference champ and Eastern will have to win the tourney to get a playoff berth

    Ragsdale spoils AHS’ Senior Night

ASHEBORO — No squad wants to finish the regular season facing the top team in the state, much less on Senior Night.

Thursday night, the Asheboro High School varsity baseball team had the “pleasure” of doing so, falling to Ragsdale 14-3 in five innings in Mid-Piedmont Conference play at McCrary Park.

The Tigers started the game by scoring six runs in the top of the first on seven straight hits off Blue Comets starter Neal Pritchard.

“They’re a good team; that’s why they’ve only lost one game,” AHS coach Tim Murray said. “We had to play a good game and they had to have an off night. They were playing with no pressure and they were loose. They really hit the ball. It seems like they hit it fifteen times up the middle.”

The Tigers (11-1, 22-1) hammered the Blue Comets with 15 hits on the night, while RHS starter Brandon Phelps pitch two-hit, shutout ball through three innings.

“There was pressure on us and when that happens, batters get more tense,” Murray said. “Their pitcher did a good job. We’ve got to be ready to match the opposition.”

The Comets (7-5, 15-8) had baserunners in the first, third and fourth innings, but didn’t score until the bottom of the fifth as AHS notched three runs on two hits off Tigers reliever Ryan Andrejco.

Pritchard took the loss, giving up eight runs on 10 hits, while striking out two batters and walking one in 2 1/3 innings of work. Justin Owens pitched 2/3 of an inning, allowing five runs on two hits, while striking out one batter and walking four. Trevor Wall finished the game, giving up one run on three hits, while striking out four batters and walking none.

At the plate, Ryan Stultz went 2-for-2, while Pritchard had a double, an RBI and a run scored. Zach Chilton added a pinch-hit RBI double.

For RHS, Phelps picked up the win, striking out five batters.

At the plate, Phelps gave himself some help, going 2-for-4 with a double, three RBIs, three runs scored and a stolen base. Brent O’Berry went 3-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and four runs scored, while Catlin Carter went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored. Buster Smith went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Ben Vestal went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, and Brian Goodwin went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Trevor Mullins and Jason Wallace each had a hit, an RBI and two runs scored.

Asheboro heads into next week’s MPC Tournament as the third seed and will host the sixth-seeded squad Monday at McCrary Park at 7 p.m.
