Charlotte Country Day 7....Marvin Ridge 4

    Marvin Ridge......002 011 0....4..5..4
    Country Day......200 050 x....7..6..5

    WP: Drew Loepprich (1-0)
    LP: Zach Kutchmaner (0-1)

    Hitting CCDS:

    Tyler Holloway 2-2
    Jimmy Kleitches 1-2, 2B, RBI
    Brian Duncan 1-3, 2B, RBI
    Colin Walls 1-2, RBI
    Ben Kepley 1-3, 2B

    Hitting MR:

    Derek Smith 1-2
    Tyler Chadwick 1-3

The home opener for the Buccaneers was an entertaining game, but revealed some early season rust on both sides as the teams combined for 9 errors, allowing several unearned runs. The Country Day bats came alive in the 5th inning after 2 errors by Marvin Ridge with 2 outs allowed the extra hitters to record three straight hits to plate 5 runs. Sophomore Drew Loepprich was solid for the Bucs, scattering 4 hits over 5 innings, but also hit three batters. Paul Barnhill pitched the last two frames in his debut for Country Day. A couple of oddities occurred during the game. In the first inning, Tyler Holloway drove a sharp single to center for the Bucs and then scored on three consecutive balk calls by the plate umpire that displeased Mavericks Head Coach Mark Mennitt. In the Marvin Ridge 5th inning, Derek Smith walked and then advanced to third on a pickoff attempt that wound up down the right field line. He then stole home as the pitch was being delivered, inducing a high throw from the mound with his daring break for the plate.

Country Day travels to Florida for its' spring break baseball trip on Friday.

    Saint - 11 (4-0, 1-0 NW 3A/4A)
    AC - 7 (1-2, 0-1 NW 3A/4A)

    WP - Colton Allison (2-0, 4 2/3 innings, 6 runs, 3 earned, 4 K, 4 hits)
    LP - Luke Watts
    SV - Zach Bumgarner (2, 2 1/3 innings, 1 unearned run, 2 K, 3 hits)

After falling behind 3-0 after 1 1/2 innings, Alexander Central struck for 3 runs in the bottom of the 2nd without benefit of a hit. A walk, catcher's interference and 3 errors led to the scoring for the Cougars.

St. Stephens broke the 3-3 tie with a 5-run 3rd inning. A 1-out Greg Lucas double was followed by a walk to Luke Barton. Zach Bumgarner took a 1-0 pitch from Luke Watts deep to right-center field for a 3-run HR. Kyrawn Whitfield and Dillion Spencer collected RBI singles later in the frame.

Saint struck for a run in the top of the 6th and AC tacked on single runs in the 5th and 6th to cut the lead to cut the lead to 9-7. With 2 outs, senior Phillip Carroll delivered a 2-run HR to provide the final margin.

Colton Allison got the win after going 4 2/3 innings allowing 6 runs (only 3 earned) on 4 hits while walking 5 and striking out 4. Bumgarner pitched the last 2 1/3 for the save.

Spencer, Dylan Beiland, Carroll, Lucas and Logan Gray had 2 hits a piece for the Indians while Tad Ratliff collected 2 hits and 2 RBI for the Cougars.

Saint heads to Bunker Hill for a non-conference game on Thursday before hosting South Caldwell on Friday night at 7:00. Alexander Central will travel to Fred T Foard on Friday evening to face the Tigers.
