Middle Creek and Athens Drive played to a 2-2 tie thru 8 innings today at Athens (no lights).

It was another Tri9 pitchers duel between Seth Watkins (MC) and Chris Williams (AD). Jimmy Boyd had a oppo field HR for MC. The game will be finished when the two teams play again at MC later in the season.

Josh Hamilton needs to throw a few bucks to ADHS for some lights!

Marvin Ridge 3....Charlotte Country Day 2

    CCDS..001 001 0....2..4..2
    MR.....001 002 x....3..4..2

    Pitching:

    CCDS William Frazier 5IP, 3H, 1R, 1ER, 7K, 0BB
    CCDS Lee Harrison 1IP, 1H, 2R, 1ER, 0K, 0BB (LP 0-1)
    MR Tyler Chadwick 5IP, 4H, 1R, 0ER, 6K 0BB
    MR Carter Harris 1 IP, 0H, 1R, 0ER, 0K, 1BB (WP)
    MR Brandon Loren 1 IP, 0H, 0R, 1K, 1BB (SV)

    Hitting:

CCDS Tyler Holloway 1-2, 2B, RBI
    MR Thompson 1-2, 2B, RBI

Game was tight throughout as the starting pitchers kept things in check. William Frazier of Country Day was in control in his first outing, striking out seven and surrendering no walks. Tyler Chadwick of Marvin Ridge matched that effort, striking out six with no walks. Both pitchers were romoved after 5 innings with the score tied 1-1. Country Day got on the board when DH Tyler Holloway hit an RBI bomb off the CF screen to plate the first run of the game. Thompson of Marvin Ridge drove a line drive double into the gap in right to bring home the Broncos first run. Things stayed tied until the 6th when both teams scored. Country Day scored when Marvin Ridge's attempt at an inning-ending double play produced a wild throw to first and pinch-runner Alex Orvos scampered home with the go-ahead run. Marvin Ridge answered in the bottom of the 6th by cobbling together a hit batsmen, a single, an error, a ground out and two fielder's choices to score two runs and go up 3-2. Brandon Loren got the last three outs in the 7th inning for the Broncos to record the save.

Lee County starts off conference play with a 2-0 win over Green Hope (now 2-1 in conference).

It was another Tri9 pitchers duel between Max Povse (GH-UNCG) and Dylan Frye (LC-Western Carolina). Both had strikeouts in the double digits.

Povse threw 5 innings, giving up 2 runs on no more than 4 hits, and I think just 1 walk. Daniel Sondag pitched the last two innings for Green Hope.

Frye pitched one heck of the game. After 6 innings, he had perfect game going. However, Green Hope managed 2 hits and a walk in the 7th to break it up. Fortunately for Lee County, a line drive double-play helped preserve the shutout.

Based off his performance tonight, I would be willing to argue Frye may be the most complete-package pitcher in the Tri-9. Good off-speed, great control, fastball had some pop on it (maxed out 87, I believe). Not trying to start an argument, as I am sure someone will contest that either Povse or Carlos Rodon (NCSU) are better, but I think as far as having all the tools, not just a fastball and a curveball to off-set it, Frye's got my vote.

JM, I think we should start a pitcher's duel tally for the Tri-9. The second week has just started and by my count, we are already at 4 (MC-HS, AD-GH, MC-AD, GH-LC). Not a good year to be a hitter in the Tri-9.

Other Scores: Heard Apex beat Panther Creek 11-10. So much for another pitcher's duel.

And last I heard was Holly Springs was beating Cary 13-0 in the top of the 1st. Not sure what has happened since, but I think Holly Springs won.

    Cuthbertson 10 - CATA 0

Cuthbertson threw it's second no hitter in as many games. While this was a combined no hitter, Cuthbertson had 1 walk, 12 K's and no hits. Cameron Tekker, Peter Hendel, and Preston Morrison were the three pitchers for Cuthbertson. It was closed out early at the end of the fifth inning.
Offense was strong pretty much across the board. Preston Morrison (2 for 4 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI's), Cameron Tekker (2 for 4 with a dbl), Austin Pierce (1 for 3 with a dbl), and Peter Hendel (1 for 4 with a grand Slam).
Cuthbertson plays it's next game on Friday against West Stanly.
