2A Baseball: Calvary squeaks by Boys Latin (Maryland)
Nothing like a nail-biter to cap off the first week of the season! The Cougars squeaked out a win this beautiful Saturday afternoon by pushing across the game winning run in the bottom of the 7th to upend the Boys Latin School from Maryland.

Seth Simmons started on the mound and tossed a scoreless 5 innings, only allowing 2 hits while striking out 12. Cameron Clinard came on to toss the final 2 innings and held on to pick up the win. Boys Latin scored their lone run in the top of the seventh to knot the score at one apiece. The inning could have been more costly if not for a spectacular play that saw Simmons and Catcher Patrik Lyons combine to gun down a Latin runner at the plate who was trying to score the go ahead run from second on a base hit to CF.

Offensively, Simmons was knocked in by Lyons to score a lone run in the first inning. Calvary's bats were then mostly held silent until the exciting bottom of the seventh. With one out, Josh Ward beat out an infield single to deep short. He then stole second before Stephen Perkins popped up to first. With two outs, Seth Simmons walked to put runners on first and second for Cameron Clinard, who stepped in and drove a game-winning single back up the middle just off the glove of the second baseman.

Calvary will return to conference play to take on Oak Ridge and American Hebrew Academy on Monday and Tuesday respectively.

    Independence 7, Richmond Co. 5

Good come from behind win for the Patriots.

Four in the sixth to go from 5-3 down to 7-5 up. Then holding on, getting out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh.

Both teams swung the bats - 25+ hits in the game.

Tyler Elkins with the W in relief.

Independence starts the season 4-0 and host both Weddington and Providence next week.

You got to love Saturday afternoon high school baseball. Wish there was more!

At the South Caldwell-Watauga game, I was sitting behind a man with a radar gun and noticed that Madison was consistantly throwing 87-88mph. Now I realize that that is still pretty hard but from what I've read on here, I was expecting to see more like 93-94. Was it just the cold mountain air or are all of these numbers just a little jacked up? He pitched well, no doubt, only giving up 4 hits, but I was surprised with the velocity

Madison was sick all week. That might have been the reason.
