    I'm with you, coach

I have to strongly disagree with Red Bear's opinion that 115 pitches is "pretty brutal". This is not an overly high number for a senior, assuming he has been working up to it for the past month and he doesn't pitch again this week. To yank him in a scoreless game would have been a no-no-no decision. That would have been "pretty brutal".

This is only the second week of action for players, for some, it is the first. Anyway you look at it, 115 pitches in early March is pretty rough. Even with a months worth of work, that is still not good for a young arm. Good performance though.

I understand that a coach can get caught up in the heat of the moment. That's why most coaches start the year with a pitch count. It's a controversial subject because certain players can give more than others. But I don't know of any professional trainer or sports medicine Dr. that would agree with a 17-18 yo throwing 115 pitches this early into his season.

And we wonder why there are more kids having tendonitis, torn labrum's and TJ surgery in record numbers...and college coaches are pulling out what little hair they have left.

I just want to remind everybody of Addison Johnson from North Forsyth now at Clemson. I think it was his junior year when he threw around 125-130 pitches vs. Rose last year in early March and was out for an extended time due to arm trouble. Be careful early because a combination of weather, pitches, and age will have a major factor on arm problems. It is a long season and I am sure coaches would like all pitchers ready for conference play. Good luck to all as conference play begins.

It's not just the pitch count, it's when you throw them and the amount of rest between starts. Pitchers stress their arms during 25 plus pitch innings. This pitcher was averaging only 14-15 pitches per inning, so he was staying well under the redline.

Yea, only. 14 per inning is great for HS baseball.

There are alot of things to consider

People will debate this one to the cows come home. There are alot of things to consider. Senior - How do his mechanics look as the game goes along - hows the velocity , is it obviously dropping etc , weather , did the kid come into the season in shape working out hard , is his arm in great shape from the off season work? Some coaches just pull a kid based on a pitch count that is predetermined before the game starts. Some coaches take at look at all the above factors and more including the amount of pitches thrown. And some leave them out there as long as they are getting the job done period. Players are all different some need to come out after 70 pitches and need a ton of rest between starts regardless of the number of pitches thrown. I dont like high pitch counts but who does? I dont know the kid. I dont know the coach. I was not there. Hopefully all the positive factors were working in his favor. Congratulations on a great performance.
