    More on Providence Myers Park

    Myers Park 000 003 0 3 11 2
    Providence 200 242 - 10 10 1

    WP Spencer Hendel, 7IP, 3R, 2ER, 11H, 1BB, 1HB, 5K
    LP Jeremy Mathis, 4.1 IP, 7R, 5ER, 6H, 1BB, 1HB, 4K

    Providence
Cory Dunning, 2-3, HR, 3R, rbi
    David Mailman, 3-4, 2 2b, 2R, rbi
    Mike Moore, 2-4, 2R, rbi

    Myers Park
    David Castevens 3-4, 1R
    Jack Magee 2-3, rbi
    Cody Drake, 2-3, rbi

I'm not sure how the official scorer scored the game's key play. With Providence up 2-0 and 2 on and 2 out in the bottom of the 4th, Dane Arneson lifted a fly ball behind third. The Mustang LF and SS held a prayer meeting around the ball and watched it fall in to score 2 runs. I scored it an error because the play could and should have easily been made, but if the scorekeeper scored it a hit, Arneson was 2-3 with 3 rbis for the game.

The game was close and well played to that point, but you could see the air come out of the Mustangs when the ball was allowed to drop in. Hats off to the Panthers, though, they hit the ball hard, made the key defensive plays, and were clearly the better team. Hensel (sorry if the spelling is wrong) was 82-85 on the stalker gun (I looked over a shoulder) and had the Mustangs chasing the high fastball on the inner part all evening. He gave up only 4 hiits over the first five, and tired a little in the sixth and seventh.

Mathis was not himself for Myers Park. His off speed stuff was good, but he didn't have his velocity or his normal accuracy with his fastball. He continues to get very little run support and it appears that he is trying to overcompensate by making perfect pitches.

Another plug for Mustang David Castevens is in order. I talked about how underrated Cat has been in my pre-season report, and he has made that prediction look good. He is now 14 for 18 on the season, having had another strong week (5-7) after missing a week with a sprained knee. David is unsigned and could really help some programs. He has pop, speed and he plays a very good third base. I hope he gets some well deserved attention soon.

I was very impressed with Providence sophomore David Mailman. He swings the bat well with power from the left side and has a lot of poise for a youngster. I like the Panthers more and more; Coach Hignight has them working hard and playing with confidence. The team has been built well for the small ballpark, as just about everyone they send to the plate is a threat to hit it out there. The pitching, which was the one question mark coming in, has improved and is solid. I think they are capable of making a real run at South Meck and challenging anyone in the state.

I will bet that that one was a dandy as this was their second meeting of the year!! Ed hall and Charlie Spivey always put excellent teams on the field each year!!! I know, I have played both in the past and know both head coaches really well.
