West Stanly defeats North Stanly 8-7. North took a 2-0 lead in the first inning with some timely hitting and some fielding errors by West. Freshman Ben Parah started for North Stanly and did a a very nice job of keeping West Stanly off the scoreboard for three innings. The fourth inning bit North Stanly three errors allowed four runs. Nathan Furr started on the mound for West Stanly pitched very well just didn't get the fielding support he needed for the first three innings. West built a 6-2 lead before north started their comeback. In the bottom of the sixth North went ahead 7-6 thanks to a homerun by Andrew Love, and some good clutch hitting by catcher Wil Davis. Andrew Love relieved Ben Parah and had West off on their hitting until the trio of Kurt Benton, Jake Byrd, and Matthew "jewbel" Burrelson. A hit by Benton, an infeild single by Byrd and a double by Burrelson proved to be the difference. Tyler Almond relieved Nathan Furr in the sixth and closed the door shut in the bottom of the inning.
Overall both teams played decent, but out of this rivalry I would expect crisper cleaner played ball. Both teams had errors that bit them.

    Charlotte Christian 16; Piedmont 1

    WP: Barthleson

The knights ran over #3 Piedmont today. they had 17 hits and just took it to the #3 team in 3A state tonight. kyle barthleson pitched a great game vs. a strong piedmont team, he located his fastball and was complimented by a discusting curveball. the knights were lead by j. bard who went 3-4 w/ 3 2b's; c. bradley 2-3, 3run hr; m. fulginiti, 3-3, has had 6 hits in last 6 AB's; m. gantner, 3-3. christian is finally starting to play up to their potential and hopefully can carry this momentum throughout the season.

    piedmont: 11-2

In a small conference with fewer games, the importance of each loss is magnified. Here are some results from the Big East.

DH Conley 6, New Bern 2
    JH Rose 11, Northern 6
    Rocky Mount 3, Havelock 1

--- Conference Standings after first week of action ---

    Rocky Mount 2-0
    JH Rose 2-0
    DH Conley 1-1
    Havelock 1-1
    Northern Nash 0-2
    New Bern 0-2

Both New Bern and DH Conley were ranked in the last poll with Conley grabbing the top spot. They have suffered two recent losses though.

    South Granville 7 7 1
    Ravenscroft 6 7 4

South Granville stepped out of conference play and played Ravenscroft Thursday night. Jr Mike Robbins got the start for South Granville and pitched 5 innings. This was Robbins second start on the year. He has only thrown 9 innings this season. He struggled a bit finding the strike zone and was not as sharp as we had hoped. With 5 different guys in our rotation and all the rain it has been tough finding innings for everyone. Ravenscroft Sr LHP West took the hill for them and went the distance. West is going to West Point next year on a full ride. I had the opportunity to talk with him after the game along with his mother. This kid is a class act Ill tell you that. Yes Sir No Sir what a fine young man. And a very good pitcher as well. He was low 80's with a great change and a pretty good curveball as well. South Granville was led at the plate by Freshman Pratt Maynard who was 2-3 with 2 dbls. Freshman Catcher Jeff May was 1-2 with a big hit in the 7th that got the rally going. Todd Helmer a Sr SS P came in the 6th inning and shut down Ravenscroft for the win. This was only the second appearance on the year for Helmer. Helmer singled to plate the 2 go ahead runs in the 7th. An error allowed two more to score for the winning margin. It should be a great game between Ravenscroft and Cardinal Gibbons when they meet. Lang for Gibbons and West for Ravenscroft.

    South Granville is 10-3 3-0

Piedmont was deep into its pitching rotation - saving the best for conference play. However, Impact's #3 ranked 3A bats were baffled by Barthelson for 4 innings while D Hill was devastating in relief to close out the 5th for CCS.

The 2 teams do meet again under the lights at CCS on Tuesday the 12th @ 7PM. Look for Piedmont to come ready to play.

I agree with AtlWood, that next week should be more represenative of what Piedmont is capable of doing. Either Parker or Lyerly should pitch with King going against Robinson on Friday. The bats need to come alive or it doesn't matter who pitches.

From outside sources I was told Vance topped West Meck 9-4. Seth didn't get to pitch tonight, which killed them. Not having his arm on that mound will make them a whole different team. I was told that Brandon Reeves took the loss.

    PHS 6 Olympic 0

#9 (4A) PHS goes to 6-0 in the SW4A with a 6-0 Victory over Olympic. The Panthers jumped on Trojan Starter (Redman?) in the 1st plating 6 runs. David Mailman led the rally off with a lined single to left. Keith Mauney then crushed a HR over the leftfield fence to make it 2-0. Ryan Semeniuk tripled to right center and scored on a base hit by Andrew Huffstetler. Austin Stephenson tripled in 3 more runs to close out the scoring, 6-0. Nate Staton relieved for Olympic in the second and shut the door on the powerful Panthers until he gave way in the bottom of the sixth. It was the first time Nate had pitched this year after arm rehabilitation last Fall. Sophomore Spencer Hendel pitched a 2-Hit, CG Shutout for the Pathers and is now 4-0 on the season. After loading the bases in the first on two walks and an error, Olympic never treatened again.

Leading Hitters: Mauney 2-3, 2-Run HR; Arneson 2-3, 1 Run Scored; Stephenson 1-3, 3 RBis.

    PHS is now 13-2 Overall.

The Panthers take on an Explosive South Meck Squad for the first time this season next Tuesday. You'll probably see the Fireworks in Raleigh....
