NPC SHOWDOWN: West Rowan 5 Northwest Cabarrus 2

A classic game, much like last year's NWC/AL Brown match-ups. After an intense pitching duel between NWC's Robby Gurley and WR's Wade Moore the score was knotted 2-2 after six innings. NWC's super-soph, Ryan Overcash (4-0, 0.86 ERA before tonight's game) came on in the 7th and was greeted by a first-pitch absolute rocket over the right field fence by Brett Hatley for a 3-run HR that more than likely decided the NPC regular season.

This game was full of drama as both starting pitchers often got in and out of trouble. Wade Moore, the winnning pitcher, was in trouble every inning---highlighted by Jerrod Faggart bouncing into a bases-loaded double-play in the 5th and some great plays by 2B Felix Bautista. Gurley was helped out by two fantastic double-plays started by 2B Connor Bean and 3B Ryan Lazenby and a diving catch by centerfielder Jake Faggart. Ryan Overcash was the hard-luck loser.

Haven't seen them listed, I got this info. from our coach. Look for the Shelby Star newspaper link this weekend to post the entire brackets. I believe it is Pool Play with Char. Christian, Burns & Shelby in one pool and South Caldwell, East Rutherford and Crest in the other. Championship is listed for Thur.

    PROVIDENCE 5 South Meck 3 (8 Innings)

Ryan Morris (SM) and Shane Small (PHS) hooked up in a good old-fashion pitchers duel. Both Lefties were hummin' it!! Ryan was relieved in the 5th by Matt Layman with South down 3-1. Layman shut down the Panthers and the Sabres clawed their way back into a 3-3 tie in regulation. All 3 Sabre runs scored in separate innings when their runner got picked off first and the Panthers started throwing the ball around. All 3 runnners scored after the 'successful' pickoffs failed!!

PHS was without 1B David Mailman who sat w a sore back & Kyle Kaiser, David's backup, who was in the hospital with a concussion, so Keith Whigham played 1B for the first time this year. Talk about being short-handed. The Panthers 6 hits matched their 6 errors. Shane Small pitched brilliantly for 7 innings before giving way to Eric Sommerville who pitched a scoreless eighth to secure the Save. The Sabres wound up with 4 hits but only 1 error.

This game lived up to its billing, with tension from start to finish. Lehman held the Panthers hitless until the eighth. Semeniuk legged out a grounder and Summerville singled to Center. Layman was called for a controversial Balk, allowing the Panthers to take the Lead. Ensuing singles by Shackleford and Wilkenson allowed the Panthers to plate an Insurance Run. The W leaves SM and PHS TIED atop the SW4A w 5-2 records. PHS is now 14-3 Overall. Independence is next for the Panthers..

    WP: Shane Small
    LP: Matt Lehman

    Fred T Foard 2 Hickory 0

The Tigers solidified their first place grip in the CVAC with a hard fought win at Hickory. Trent Rothlin went the distance for the Tigers only giving up 2 hits while striking out 10. Rothlin was aided by a couple of stellar defensive plays late in the game.

Foard's bats came alive and delivered 10 hits. Leading the Tigers with three hits were Trent Rothlin while Tyler Buchanan and Chad Rothlin each had two hits.

The Tigers (14-2, 10-1) next play Maiden in the Catawba Valley Easter Classic on Monday at 5:00.

    WS vs E. Rowan

    East tops West Stanly
East Rowan's baseball team handed West Stanly only its second loss of the season with a 7-3 win in Oakboro on Wednesday.
East (11-5) trailed 3-1 after five innings, but Will Johnson's two-run double in the sixth got the Mustangs even.
Cy Young's pinch-hit double started a four-run seventh for the Mustangs. After walks to Justin Roland and Trey Holmes, Craige Lyerly's swinging bunt got through the right side and scored two runs.
D.C. Cranford's bouncer over the third baseman's head brought in two more runs.
Lyerly, East's third pitcher, got the win with two scoreless innings. Ross Steedley started for East and was relieved in the fourth inning.
