Congratulations Ryan Jennings on 5 IP of shut out relief. I tip my hat to the boys of Hickory Grove with a big win tonight against Christian. Two quality teams going at it with HG coming out on top 3-2.

The Lions are getting better and better every week. Jennings and the core of this team have been working out with Gary Robinson every weekend. Along with their much improved coaching staff, the LIONS program is on the rise. Look for this team to produce some of the best talent around.

Hey Braves I have a mid-state update for ya. Apex knocked off Lee Co. Thursday night to give Lee their first conf. loss on the year. The Tri-Seven should be very interesting coming down the wire. Apex is now (8-5, 5-3) and Lee (10-9, 6-1) These teams have split on the year with two excellent coaches at the helm. Del Phillips is in his first year at Apex and Charlie Spivey has been around since '84 with Charlie getting the edge on a better farm tan. These two guys even played a little college ball together and are class acts. Pitchers lines from Thursday : WP Seth Frankoff 7IP, 9H, 4R, 4ER, BB, 7K. LP Zach Furl 4.2 IP, 9H, 5R, 5ER, 3BB, K. Brett Maciukiewcz had a big HR to Cf. Best of luck to both programs. One more fun fact for ya Braves; okay maybe two. Del's son is a senior releif pitcher for the Tarheels and was coached by Charlie on the state championship team in '01. Anymore data like that and I'll have to start charging T.J.

One heck of a pitchers duel at South Point tonite. Michael Bogaert and David Bumgardner both pitched 10 inning. Drew Martin led off the 10th innning hitting the first pitch over the left field fence for a HR. Devon Harris had a 2 run HR in the 10th also. Bumgardner gave up 6 hits, 3 in the 10th, 9 Ks. Bougaert gave up 2 hits with 13 Ks, struck out the side in the bottom of the 10th

    Ashbrook...............3-6-0
    South Point............0-2-2

The Lions and the Knights both had proms Friday night. If curfew was 3:00 am both teams should of had plenty of time to prepare for a Saturday night game. Don't discount the fact that both teams played well. The Lions made a couple of super defensive plays and Jennings was very tough on the hill. A great defensive play by the Lions catcher Zack Dunn at home stopped a score that could have put the game into extra innings.

wow - look at this boxscore

    TEAM-------- 123 456 7 --- R--H--E
    SE GUILFORD - 038 100 6 - 18-18-2
    E -RANDOLPH - 028 410 1 - 16-13-4

WP - Isaac Brady(4-1) LP - Zack Strickland
    Leaders SEG - Dustin Lineback 3-5, 2 2Bs,HR;Lester Rivenbark 2-4, 2B,HR;Adam Stone 4-5;Clint Moore 3-5 ER - Nick Hylton 2-5, HR;Jared Davis 2-2, HR.
    Recods SEG 7-3, 12-5 -- ER 9-1, 17-2.

That must have been one heckuva game Friday night. I wonder if the ER coach regrets putting the starter back in the 7th only to give up a 3 run homer? A huge win for SE Guilford giving Eastern Randolph their first conference loss. Puts SEG in sole posession of 3rd place in the Tri-County 3A for the last playoff spot. It was also a huge win for my Ragsdale Tigers who with two conference losses have a chance to tie for first in the conference with a big home win on May 3rd. Of course Ragsdale has to take care of business against the bottom half of the conference standings between now and then.

    SE Guilford outslugs Wildcats

RAMSEUR - As the Tri-County Conference schedule hits the final run to the finish, every game becomes that much more important in the race for the three playoff spots allotted the league.

Emotions run high and the competition gets even tougher. But when Friday night's game between Eastern Randolph High School and Southeast Guilford ended, there were no words that could accurately or adequately describe what happened.

When it was over, ER coach Tommy Maness could only say: "Been around baseball a long time and never been a game quite like tonight. I wish I could explain it."

The game that started as a storm blew into the area, became the storm on the ground and the Falcons overcame repeated obstacles to hand ER its first TCC defeat 18-16. SEG's Dustin Lineback dealt the killer blow with a three-run home run in the top of the seventh while senior reliever Isaaca Brady overcame an on-base collison with R.J. Lassiter and two errors in the bottom of the seventh to earn the win.

"Its' a big win," said SEG coach Kevin Callahan. "What a ball game."

Last year, the Falcons (12-5, 7-3 in TCC) came to Grady Lawson Field and jumped on top of ER 6-0, only to go home after five innings with a 16-6 defeat. No one at Friday's game could have predicted this outcome.

Heading to the final inning, Maness and the Wildcats hit the seventh inning, three outs from an improbable victory.

Four straight hits, including a double by Brady, brought the visiting fans and the Falcons to their feet for a tie game at 15-15, even after Maness had pulled reliever Jared Davis to put his starter back on the mound. Then Lineback, after being doubled off second following a ground-rule double the inning before, delivered what would be a game-winning three-run home run and an 18-15 lead.

"We got the lead and I was thinking what a great win this would be for ER, but it wasn't meant to be," said Maness. "(SEG) came and got those six runs and tore the cover off the ball in the seventh inning ... and they won the ball game."

In the bottom half, two fly ball errors around a single by Brandon Smith cut ER's deficit to 18-16 when Zack Strickland's walk loaded the bases. Callahan told Brady the game was in his hands and the Falcons survived to get two ground ball outs to secure the win.

"We had our chances in the seventh inning," said Maness. "I like that situation, bases loaded and no out. Isaac Brady just did a great job with the last three of our batters."

In all, there were 31 runs on 33 hits and five errors between the two teams.

Callahan said he's glad it's over.

"In the last two games, our pitching staff has given up 17 on Wednesday and 16 today," he said. "We're going to take the weekend off."

A three-run second inning opened SEG's scoring before the Wildcats' J.J. Pena delivered a two-run triple in the bottom of the second for a 3-2 score heading to a wild third.

First, the Falcons plated eight runs on nine hits for a short-lived 11-2 lead. Then, the Wildcats answered with eight runs on six hits, including a three-run blast by Nick Hylton to cut it to 11-10.

After Lester Rivenbark's solo home run in the top of the fourth made it 12-10, Davis capped the Wildcats' four-run fourth, blasting the first pitch for a three-run homer and their first lead, 14-12. Another run in the fifth set up the charge to the finish.

"I've been doing this 24-years ... At 11-2 (lead) we knew we were in a battle," said Callahan. "We've got some tired arms right now. We knew they were going to come out swinging and they did."
