Salisbury is nasty on defense and they have plenty of talent on the other side of the ball as well. It felt like old times watching a team run out of the wishbone. Joe Pinyan and his staff do a real good job with those kids.

I was afraid that the titans were going to revert to their old ways but it looks like they have a confidence and winning attitude that was missing before. That is the most important key to winning. You don't come back from 21-7 without believing in yourselves. Hopefully they can keep it up and make some noise in the NW4A

    Ragsdale 21 SW Guilford 20
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ragsdale escaped with a big win as these teams finally renewed their rivalry after taking about three years off.

This was supposed to be a huge blowout win for Ragsdale based on last week's results but tonight just showed you can't always go by first week scores and there is no discounting a rivalry game, especially since SWG hasn't beat Ragsdale in forever.

Started out rough for Ragsdale, fumbling away the kickoff. SWG had eight plays from the five thanks to two penalties on the Tigers, finally punching it in from the one. Ragsdale moved right down the field but penalties did them in again as their first possession of the ended with a fourth and goal from the 25 interception in the end zone.

SWG passed pretty well tonight and they took a 14-0 lead with a 31 yard scoring pass with eight minutes left in the second. Ragsdale finally got on the board a minute later as Tim Romer found TE Ian Jenkins over the middle for a 66 yard TD pass. Ragsdale held on SWG next possesion then tied the score as Nick Mearite took a punt on his 35, dropped the ball then took it all the way for a 65 yard punt return TD. Score tied 14-14 at the half.

Ragsdale's momentum didn't last long as penalties (some questionable) kept SWG drives alive and killed their own and with 15 seconds left in the third SWG scored on a 67 yard TD pass. Big play wsa Walt Sparks blocking the PAT SWG 20-14 after three.

Ragsdale continued to struggle in the fourth with penalties stalling drives, ultimately backing them up with a 4th and 20 from their own five with a little over five minutes left. But a 25 yard pass to Nick Mearite kept the drive alive. Another fourth and five from the 50 was coverted with a 14 yard completion to Cedric Miller. From theri Charles Thomasson took it home with a 36 yard TD with 3:46 left. Casey Redfern was good on his third PAT of the night for the 21-20 lead.

But SWG would not quit. Two big pass plays got them a first and goal from the three with about 90 seconds left. After a run for no gain SWG made a big mistake, throwing a fade to the corner that was picked off by Darius McQueen to save the game for Ragsdale.

WHEW! great ball game. ALways great to beat your rival whether by 40 or 1. Next year this will be a conference game and hopefully will be just as exciting. Ragsdale now 2-0 with NW Guilford (also 2-0) at home

    Greensboro Dudley - 19
    Richmond County - 14

A blocked punt for a touchdown late wins it for Dudley.

    Crest 28 Burns 0

The game wasn't as close as the 28-0 score. Crest had 350 yards of offense, Burns had 149. 59 yards of Burns offense came off of one pass play in the 4th qtr when Crest had replaced a lot of starters. Crest also had 4 turnovers which is certainly something they need to work on. Crest had 70 yards in penalties to Burns 25. Give the kids on the Burns D a lot of credit. They spent a lot of time on the field, but they kept fighting. Burns nearly got burnt when they called timeout with 9 seconds to go in the first half. It was 4th down for Crest and the clock was going to run out. The Bulldogs called timeout giving Crest one more play. After the TO, Wilkins completed a great pass with a defender holding on to his ankle. Brandong Strong made the catch, but was knocked out of bounds at around the 2.

No doubt Burns will continue to get better and should get in the win column this week vs East Gaston. The Chargers now turn their attention to Freedom.

    Stat leaders:
    Burns
    Chris Page 59 yrds passing
    Monterrio Merriweather 39 yrds rushing
    Chris Marlow 57 yrds receiving

    Crest
    Reggie Wilkins 66 yrds passing
    Reggie Wilkins 146 yrds rushing (3 TD's)
    Quartez Wright 64 yrds rushing
    Brandon Strong 63 yrds receiving

I think East Burke playing a South Carolina team will be to their benefit especially later in the season and in the playoffs when they'll likely come across more athletes.

The McDowell/Mitchell game last night was probably one of the best I've seen in this mountain rivalry. The Mounties were definintely a step up from Enka, they have a couple good players on their team. They took their 1st possession of the game and ran it right down us...it didn't look good early on. But the credit must go to our kids for hanging in there and fighting. Coach Gowan said in friday's McDowell News that it was going to be a war...and it definitely was.

I remember there at the half when it was 13-7, I told some folks sitting near by that we needed a defensive stop on the opening poss. of the 2nd half. Mitchell once again executed their offense to near perfection and in just a matter of minutes it was 21-7. In recent years, the Titans would have never recovered from that. But, those days are over. Arrowood calmly put together that long scoring drive including his touchdown on the bootleg to make it 21-14. That drive was what I would call a "character drive." That all brought back the energy that led into the exciting final 12 minutes. We just kept making clutch play when it was needed. And it all came down to that 4th and 10. Amerto, who had un-like him dropped a couple passes earlier in the contest, he was money on that game-tying score.

All the momentum we had late just carried over into OT. The fact that we went for 3 instead of 7 in OT shows that the coaches not only have confidence in the kicking game but also in our defense. Mitchell got completely rattled by the time OT started, their first play was a bad snap. And then they had that personal foul after the 3rd down play...that pretty much sealed their fate.

All in all just an amazing win by the Titans coming back from 2 scores in the 2nd half at an environment like Mitchell. I cannot wait until next friday when McDowell gets to play their home opener. I'll be extremely disappointed if we don't have a monster crowd. East Rutherford will be more of a challenge, they'll have more athletes on the field compared to Enka and Mitchell.

Davie opens the season with Watauga, West Rowan and then Thomasville? Looks like they aren't afraid to see what they've got.
