The message CMS is sending to its students and the rest of us in the state is if you cheat and lie you will go far in life, but if you tell the truth then it is over. CMS has to quit playing politics and do the right thing. There is a right way and wrong way to do things and CMS is letting the wrong prevail. I do not think it would be that hard to check to see where someone lives, there is a lot of information available on the internet about who owns which property and for how long and if there is any question at all then physcially visit the residence. If a school is found to have lied or they want to say the student lied then it should still fall back to the school because they could easily check this stuff out. I believe schools should have to sit out a year or two from playoff eligiblity if something is found out and if players move from school to school in the county then they have to sit out a year before playing a sport. I thought the NCHSAA already states you have to attend the school you are participating in sports for at least 1 or 2 semesters before starting that sport. When are academics going to start being pushed by these coaches as much as winning. We all know that making good grades academically will take these kids further then any sport ever will and if they have good grades then they will probably be offered more money to go to college. I would like to know the GPA's of some of these athletes at CMS. I have known of coaches that have tried to get teachers to change an athlete's grade so they could play a sport - that is real morals, but the teacher had more morals than the coach and would not change the grade. CMS stop pushing lying and cheating and start pushing academics - it might help your school system.

Independence, West Charlotte players removed from teams

A football player from West Charlotte High and another from Independence High were removed from their teams -- before tonight’s state semi-final playoff game -- because of questions about their eligibility.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, after an extensive review of student-athlete eligibility, also announced other eligibility problems:

    * A South Mecklenburg High basketball player and a Providence High swimmer have been declared ineligible. South Mecklenburg will forfeit its Nov. 15 game against Waddell High School. The Providence High School swimmer will have to forfeit any points earned; the school will not incur any penalty.

    * The West Charlotte High varsity boys’ basketball team will have a penalty and fine assessed by the state association for holding a practice on a Sunday, which violates state rules.

Because of the eligibility problems in football, West Charlotte now will be without a player when it takes on Independence at 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in Charlotte. Independence will be missing player. Neither player's name was immediately available.

Neither team will likely have to forfeit any games, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, because the students’ families had provided false documents.

State rules say in those cases, players will be penalized, not schools.

The players’ removals resulted from the Observer’s two-month investigation of high school athletic eligibility. They mark the latest shortcomings in a verification system initially defended by CMS leaders, but now under review.

This football season has seen a record number of Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools forfeit games for using ineligible players. Including Friday’s suspensions, four athletes have been ruled ineligible at three schools -- just during this month’s playoffs. At one of those schools -- South Mecklenburg High -- the entire team had to forfeit because school personnel were determined to be at fault on certifying eligibility, not the player and his family.

Man do you really believe that Indy or West Char. did not know about this situation people are not that stupid. They knew and they also knew how to solve it now that it is out. All they had to say is we did not know yea right. Dont tell me the coaches of these two teams as well as many others dont know they have this going on, they do and they know the right things to say to get out of it. It is just a shame that the state is going to allow them to get by with it, its all money the Char. Meck schools send alot of money there way. Im not looking to punish there teams but man this sure is a great way to close out the football season. Im not a Watauga high school fan just a supporter; and lets just hope they win the 4A because like many other schools I support I know they are legit they and others have the PRIDE to do it right. Char. Mech go get you another title and enjoy.

what a better way to stop this than to tell wc and indy your season is over ,and to the kids that has done the right thing sorry but it your coachs fault and your school for letting this go on.what a joke charlotte high school football is.if one of them win state then it should be known that they played with players that they was not supposed to play right on that trophy and on there rings, that we won but we cheated to win.

how is it the school and the coaches fault? surely you dont think the system should go door to door and make sure the player or students actually live at that home listed on the schools registration forms ?

i guess the coaches and school administrators in the system you belong to goes door to door and checks ?
    i doubt it ..

its not cheating by the school or coaches if the student / athlete lied about where he lived ..
