    weekend experience

I went to a tournament this weekend, with a dozen or so 18u teams, some i knew, most i have never seen. between friday night and saturday, i had been approached by no less than six girls and their parents about playing on the team that my dd was playing on!!!????? when asked why they wanted to leave, it came down to one of three reasons:

#1 reason(3 of the six) was that the team didnt come together as advertised and they felt they had payed too much for what they got.

#2 reason (2 of six) they struggled every tournament to fill a full team and never knew who was gonna show up to play

#3 reason (1 of six) - not happy with playing time.

you could tell that fall ball was approaching just by the talk - didnt need a calender for that.

this was my dd's last travel tournament, she is done, done, done. so my advice to all was find a team that makes your dd happy, and try to fulfill the committment that you've currently made.

    Cheeze....GREAT STATEMENT

"FULFILL THE COMMITMENT YOU'VE CURRENTLY MADE"

Something I'm not sure is being taught to todays youth, even outside the ball field!

    COMMITTMENT

That word means so much!!! look, if you have eight girls depending on you being there, and your gone, you just let a butt load of people down. I watched it this weekend on six different teams, all struggling to get enough players to just finish the tournament. shouldnt be that way, and our team was one of them.

    math?

    Maybe they don't know what 9 - 1 equals ??
There's lack of commitment in non-sports groups for youth as well. It's the "ME" generation, no doubt. Just so I'M doing what I want at a certain time, that's the priority. And planning ahead?, most really don't care for that either.

    other options

coincidentally I spoke to a guy this a.m. on my way to work who was a longtime softball coach, that I had not seen in a while. knew his daughter still was a teenage player. he said that's the very reason he had gotten out of coaching. tired of the hassle of recruiting players, then seeing them come & go to other teams.

will there ever be other options on the table for TB, like leagues with territorial boundaries......... I suppose much like american legion baseball?
I know there is already rec ball obviously, but nobody is cut.

any other ideas ever been put out there?

    Commitment

I'll go you one better. How would you like to be getting ready to go to a Florida for a Showcase Tourney and find out that only one of your three coaches is going?:agreed:

OH BOY! we will start playing 16's this fall and this is what we are looking forward to? I thought that surely once we got to showcase time that the wheat would be seperated from the chaff but apparently not.... and I thought having girls not show up for state championship tournaments was bad enough at 14!!!! Any advice?.. this is incredibaly discouraging; it makes you want to punt the whole thing! :thud:

    Committment

That word is a two way street!!!!!!! Many ball players and parents don't see it that way even when they are on a good team and playing every inning. Kind of like the horse eating weeds over the fence instead of nice green grass cause it looks bigger and more appetizing than the spot they have! Many coaches work very hard to promote their players and to teach them loyality and committments but if parents don't support and teach kids not everything evolves around them, nothing will change. I say that but most kids would not leave a team if truly given a choice, parents cause many issues.:
Lastly, all I can say is U get what U ask for with this coaching staff if they do not care enough to go. Obviously, the girls are not real important or they would have made some arrangements to attend.:twocents: :blah:
